The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.

Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy-to-access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness. Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of health care that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Family Health Centre, we run a Seniors Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Community Food Centre and the Children’s Legal & Educational Resource Centre (CLERC).

Under general direction, the Maintenance Custodian performs custodial and general maintenance services at the Alex Community Food Centre and general maintenance support at other Alex buildings by keeping assigned areas clean, orderly, safe, and secure; performs related duties as assigned.

What you will do:

Sanitation
  • Clean offices , lunchrooms, meeting rooms, kitchens, and exam rooms
  • Clean and sanitize restroom areas
  • Major cleaning activities including powered equipment for floors and carpets
Safety/Security/Maintenance
  • Report and remove an safety hazards
  • Perform minor repairs
  • Identify and report the need for major repairs
  • Assist in maintaining and updating a minor repair/jobs maintenance log
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations including: policies and procedures;  protecting your own and others’ physical and psychological health and safety; as well as, refraining from behaviors of violence and/or harassment
Grounds Keeping
  • Keep grounds neat and clean at all times
  • Clean external areas
  • Use motorized equipment to mow and maintain grass areas
Supply/Inventory Control and Distribution
  • Receive and unload inventory and maintain supplies for the Community Health Centre warehouse
  • Distribute supplies as requested to appropriate buildings
  • Keep warehouse organized for supplies; prepare necessary paperwork to order items; maintain records related to inventory and supplies; refill all supplies and paper products in restrooms

Site Support

  • Assists in moves and equipment/furniture relocations
  • Perform other related duties as required

What you bring:

  • Sufficient formal and/or informal training to provide the ability to read and write at a level consistent with the requirements of the position
  • Any combination of training and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties as described; a typical qualifying background would include custodial experience at a school site or camp setting, and basic vehicle maintenance, carpentry, electrical and plumbing experience
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials and methods and the proper use of chemicals and materials in cleaning; safety practices and sanitary procedures
  • Skill and ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form; read, understand and follow instructions, schedules, and directions; operate a variety of cleaning and maintenance equipment in a safe manner; perform minor repairs; maintain tools and equipment in clean working order; work cooperatively and effectively independently and with groups
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Must maintain physical stamina and proper mental attitude to work in harm-reduction environments and effectively interact with employees, clients and visitors in all situations
