The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.  The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of health care that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Community Health Centre, we run a Seniors Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Community Food Centre and Youth Law. 

What we do and why we do it:

The Youth Health Centre (YHC) has been making a difference in the lives of Calgary’s youth aged 12 – 24 since 2008.  We understand the unique challenges faced by vulnerable youth in our community.  Our dedicated team of professionals are passionately committed to providing services and supports that break down barriers to a healthy future.   

The Licensed Practical Nurse will be responsible for establishing a client-centered, nonjudgmental, and harm reduction focused practice at the Youth Health Centre. This will involve engaging clients in activities to promote health and wellness and becoming active participants in their own medical care. Working with a multidisciplinary team, the LPN will support the client in maintaining their physical, mental, and social wellbeing. For a two-year term, the LPN will function as both a support for the physician and nurse practitioners within the Youth Health Centre but also work autonomously in seeing clients independently for contraception, sexual and reproductive health, and specimen collection, amongst other duties.  This position reports to the Clinic Coordinator.   

What you will do:

  • Strong commitment to working with individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness and addictions.
  • Strong skills in health promotion and illness prevention.
  • Possess the skills or be willing to learn the skills of phlebotomy
  • Management and administration of medication in conjunction with the Psychiatrist and Family Physician.
  • Performing assessments, providing education and supporting clients directly
  • Ability to build rapport with marginalized individuals, understanding of Mature Minor Doctrine in Alberta, time management skills, ability to work independently 
  • Strong knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, child and adolescent development, and harm reduction
  • Receive training in the areas of evidence based practice such as Motivational Interviewing, Mental Health First Aid, ASSIST, and Narcan Administration 

What you bring:

  • Current registration with CLPNA required
  • Able to work independently with clients
  • Minimum of two years progressive Nursing experience working with clients with mental health and addictions disorders, homelessness, and poverty
  • Excellent communication, organizational, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skills
  • Able to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team model and innovative outreach service delivery model
  • Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of social services and non-profit services in Calgary is an asset
  • Experience with group facilitation is an asset
  • Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment
  • Current First Aid/CPR is mandatory
  • A class 5 non-GDL driver’s license is required
  • Responsible, being aware of, and following all health and safety, including psychological health and safety, policies and procedures; for protecting your own and others’ health and safety at work sites; and, refraining from violence and harassment
