Position Summary: 

The Kitchen Worker reports directly to the Kitchen Supervisor.  The Kitchen Worker is responsible for the day to day preparation of meals at Inn from the Cold and will help in preparing meals for our guests. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Include: 

The Kitchen Worker will perform a wide range of duties which may include:

  • Determine expected food consumption, quantities to be cooked and size of portions to be served, taking into account diets to meet medical, ethnic and personal needs; then procure food from storage
  • Wash, cut, and prepare foods designated for cooking
  • Prepares a variety of meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables and other food items for cooking in broilers, ovens, grills, and a variety of other kitchen equipment
  • Verify that prepared food meets requirements for quality and quantity
  • Performs the general cleaning and proper handling of food leftovers (reusable) after meal services. Re-organizes refrigerators, re-stocks items up to par, re-organizes section for next meal period
  • Promptly report equipment and food quality or shortage problems to Kitchen Manager
  • Assists with food requisition to ensure sufficient stock but no wastage and check quantity and quality of stock received
  • Participate in the preparation, cooking and serving of meals, snacks, etc. in accordance with specified menus and have strictly quality control
  • Maintain food preparation and serving areas to ensure observance of safe, sanitary food-handling practices
  • Wash and clean floors, crockery, utensils, work surfaces and other kitchen/s equipment to ensure that the necessary hygiene and health and safety standards are maintained in the kitchen/s and dining room as appropriate
  • Assist with menu planning in consultation with the Kitchen Supervisor
  • Coordinate and oversee work of kitchen volunteers
  • Attends all scheduled employee meetings as required and brings suggestions for improvement
  • Load and unload donations as required
  • Maintain a high level of respect for IFTC property (tools, vehicles, facility, etc.)
  • Follow guidelines and procedures of Inn from the Cold
  • Other duties as required 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Knowledge of techniques and equipment for preparing and cooking of food products (both plant and animal) for consumption, including storage/handling techniques
  • Must be able to read and follow a recipe unsupervised
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with managers, kitchen and other staff
  • Be able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 50 pounds
  • Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 12 hours)
  • Be willing to follow direction and ask questions for clarification if needed
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely
  • Must have a positive attitude and work well with other team members
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and work safe practices
  • WHMIS and Food Safety certificate an asset
