Interim Director of Finance (1 Year Mat Leave)

Reporting to the CEO, The Interim Director of Finance will be responsible for and undertake all finance, accounting, and financial reporting activities. The hands on Interim Director of Finance will lead all day-to day finance operations of a budget of $6 million and will supervise a team of 2 staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll & benefits, and funds raised through development activities. The Interim Director of Finance will ensure that the Children’s Cottage has the systems, policies, and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and to conduct flawless audits. The Interim Director of Finance will work closely with program managers, directors and the CEO in order to ensure appropriate budget management.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with         appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Prepares Charitable returns and GST
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures
  • Coordinates and leads all audit activity
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the Society’s financial status
  • Provide The Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and the Board of Directors with timely financial reports and analysis. Present financial reports and budgets to the Committee’s and to the Board
  • Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget
  • Administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
  • Initiate the engagement of the finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working collaboratively with the program managers, director of Programs, Director of Development, and the CEO
  • Continuously collaborate with leadership to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines
  • Strategically participate in the Society’s Executive Team participating in organizational leadership and planning.

 Qualifications:

  • Proven work experience as a Director of Finance with seven to ten years of accounting and finance experience, including accounting and audit, experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to board members, executive teams and external stakeholders
  • Experience in a nonprofit that has multiple programs and funders
  • CA/CPA or CMA/CPA essential
  • Strong communication skills, written, presentation and verbal
  • Strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail is essential
  • Able to work effectively with others
  • Computer skills include working knowledge of QuickBooks, Excel, Ceridian and Power Pay

Hours:  Full time (40 Hour work week)
