Supervisor: Calgary Program Manager


Location: Calgary, AB


We’re seeking a highly-motivated, energetic and articulate Instructor to join our high-performing Calgary team. The Instructor partners with our participants in thoughtful and creative ways that guide and motivate them to reach their full potential.


Through quality conversation and meaningful exploration, the Instructor will build and maintain relationships with participants, with a focus on goal setting, overcoming obstacles and achieving success, while adhering to established NPower Canada program guidelines.


The overall objective of this role is not only to deliver and manage technology instruction but to inspire and coach young minds to be future leaders of the digital economy. The Instructor works in an interdisciplinary program delivery team, including a Program Coordinator, Social Worker, Job Coach and Program Manager to ensure that the program is being delivered and measured effectively. The Instructor will be responsible for delivering an innovative technology curriculum that caters to different learning styles and a diverse range of learning needs. 




Contract Duration: April 22 - August 30, 2019 with potential for renewal.


Hours: 30 hours per week, including 20 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of tutoring and 4 hours of administrative work and other duties as assigned; classroom hours are Mondays to Fridays, 9 AM to 1 PM, while tutoring hours will be on weekday afternoons.




Participant Coaching and Support

  • Demonstrate the use of research-based instructional strategies and share resources to improve participant achievement.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current research, best instructional practices, and technology integration across content.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with participants to build trust and act as their personal coach throughout their program of study.
  • Evaluate participants’ abilities, interests and personality characteristics to provide regular coaching and support activities.
  • Maintain high-levels of participant satisfaction as measured by participant retention, satisfaction surveys and graduation rates.
  • Work with participants to help set personal goals and troubleshoot any at-risk issues.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, ongoing academic intervention, and holding participants accountable for both structured and self-directed learning plans.
  • Provide individual tutoring support to participants with demonstrated need/specific learning challenges.
  • Implement appropriate interventions to address behavioural issues or learning difficulties that encourage motivation and engagement.
  • Provide accurate and timely feedback to the participants related to their learning objectives.
  • Hold daily drop-in “office hours” to support participants with: exam preparation, chapter/exam objective review, study skills, motivation, etc.



  • Planning, preparing, and delivering technical workshops to prepare groups of 35-40+ participants per session for Junior IT Analyst roles.
  • To teach and educate participants according to the educational needs, abilities and attainment potential of individual participants.
  • Deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning and highlight the goals, objectives, and labs outlined by NPower Canada curriculum
  • Teach modules related but not limited to:

➢     CompTIA A+

➢     Cisco IT Essentials

➢     Project Management Fundamentals

➢     Information Technology Service Management (ITSM)

➢     Software Development Fundamentals

  • Train, prepare and work to maintain a minimum 80 percent pass rate for the A+ 901 and 902 Certification Exams. 
  • Keep updated with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of participants' progress and development
  • Prepare required reports on participants and activities that capture participant readiness to write the CompTIA A+ Certification.
  • Ensuring high standards of professional practice and quality of teaching and learning of the subject matter. Through effective dialogue, participating in reciprocal peer review and observation of class teaching practice by Program Manager and Senior Education Manager.


Classroom Management

  • Maintain a safe, professional and respectful classroom environment simulating the professional workplace environment.
  • Work to maintain at least an 80 percent participant retention rate.
  • Increase critical thinking, analysis, and problem solving skills of participants.
  • Motivate participants to actively participate and engage in learning.
  • Be able to impart real-world scenarios that are outside of “core” course of study (example: handling server down-time with users, working with challenging customers, etc.).





  • Commitment and readiness to earn A+ Certification within 4-6 weeks of start date
  • Current A+ Certification or comparable technical knowledge is an asset.
  • B.Ed., M.Ed., or comparable post-secondary diploma or degree and experience related to Education and Training.
  • Experience teaching Cisco IT Essentials Course is an asset.



  • At least 2 to 3 years of experience in a teaching/facilitation role.
  • At least 2 to 3 years of experience developing and delivering engaging lesson plans and workshops.



  • Maintains high professional standards and puts participants first.
  • Must have good classroom management skills, and ability to work with diverse groups of varying ages, abilities and levels of maturity.
  • Experience working with youth of diverse backgrounds including people with disabilities, LGBTQ, low income and racialized participants.
  • A passion for helping people grow and develop themselves.
  • Ability to motivate participants to actively participate and be accountable for their learning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – experience working with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Excellent communication (oral, written, and listening) skills.
  • An interest in creating a hands-on interactive learning environment.
  • Ability and desire to act as a mentor and role model to young budding technologists.
  • Must be flexible, open to new ideas, creative and energetic, in addition to working well in team-based, entrepreneurial, and diverse environment.
  • Experience in one or more of the following fields helpful but not required: workforce development, education, information technology, youth development, human potential, human resources, IT staffing, or social services.
  • Understanding of participant and adult learning principles.
  • Ability to plan and implement small and large group learning activities.
  • Ability to model/promote technology integration practices in the classroom.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of new computer, video, communication, web-based technologies, curriculum design, and working knowledge of instructional design and assessments.
  • Proficiency with educational software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, Schoology, etc.


Compensation:      Hourly rate commensurate with experience.
