The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.  The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy-to-access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness. Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health.

What we do and why we do it:

The Housing First Programs support Calgarians overcoming chronic homelessness.  These programs offer a wide range of resources (including Health, Mental Health, Addictions, Social, Housing and Legal Specialists) to help address the complexities of this vulnerable population.  The Housing portion of this strategy is the backbone of the Housing First Programs, of which the Housing Support Liaison (HSL) is an integral component.  The HSL works closely with clients, clinicians, caseworkers, property managers and the Housing support Team to help foster healthy tenancies.  The HSL is often faced with a wide variety of complex problems, therefore the HSL must be a skilled problem solver that is able to consider multiple stakeholders interests as well as multiple professional requirements.  Most importantly, The Housing Support Liaison invests in clients: by working alongside them in challenging situations, building their capacity in independent living, and developing essential skill sets to promote successful housing.

What you will do:

  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations including: policies and procedures;  protecting your own and others’ physical and psychological health and safety; as well as, refraining from behaviors of violence and/or harassment
  • Assist clients in partnership with the case worker with housing applications, assist and or complete supportive and subsidized housing paperwork
  • Conduct pre/post housing inspections photograph, and document suites condition
  • Track housing placement, support for all referred and housed consumers 
  • In coordination with the case manager, provide access to resources to assist as needed during their move into permanent housing
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with landlords and other housing providers, including acting as a liaison between landlord and client as needed, and between client and case worker as needed
  • Monitor and refine the Eviction Prevention program and processes
  • Report to supervisor opportunities and missed opportunities for Eviction Prevention
  • Facilitating the execution of required program paperwork and documents. (i.e. Notices under the RTA)
  • Conduct Housing Quality Standard Inspection; advise and advocate for clients with regard to quality housing standards 
  • Act as a liaison between various housing authorities and landlords when assisting clients with navigating various subsidized housing options
  • Provide housing availability to the team in an efficient and timely manner
  • Maintains client confidentiality and clear boundaries
  • Participate in staff meetings and training as directed by supervisor
  • Complete all relevant monthly, quarterly and annual program reports in a timely manner
  • Back-up other staff and assist the Housing Support team in completing their tasks as needed

The Housing Support Liaison will also assist the Housing Supports Logistics Coordinator in the following tasks:

  • Proactively seek out new housing opportunities and resources to assist homeless individuals with locating and securing housing
  • Locate available units in the community for rental assistance programs and Master Leased programs (if applicable) to secure leases and other rental agreements
  • Maintain consistent communication with landlords via telephone, e-mail and in person
  • Collect and share feedback from landlords about the housing programs with team members
  • Coordinate individualized housing needs assessment for all referred clients and develop housing plans that address barriers
  • Maintain a housing directory to include documentation of all contacts with housing providers

What you bring:

  • A genuine desire to help Calgarians facing chronic homelessness to secure safe housing while coping with addictions and/or physical and mental health challenges
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Conflict resolution/de-escalation/negotiation skills
  • Experience working with venerable population
  • Know of the Residential Tenancies Act
  • Ability to understand and improve systems and processes
  • Strong team player
  • Strong ability to advocate for those facing challenges
  • Understanding of mental health and addiction
