Healthy Families Home Visitor- AVIRT

Healthy Families Home Visitor– 8 month contract (Maternity Leave coverage)

The Children's Cottage Society of Calgary provides crisis nursery, respite, and family support programs for vulnerable children. To achieve our vision of “Safe Children in Healthy Families” we are looking for an experienced and professional individual to work with the Society’s Healthy Families Home Visitation program. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the Alberta Vulnerable Infant Response Team (AVIRT) and Child & Family Services Caseworkers to strengthen families, reduce risk factors and enhance family preservation.
  • Thorough knowledge of early childhood development and experience with developmental screening
  • Serve families in their home in Calgary, personal transportation is required as there is frequent travel throughout the City. 
  • Establish and maintain a supportive and mentoring relationship with complex families by providing regular services through home visits.  Averaging a caseload of 15 families.
  • Use reflective coaching skills to address identified family concerns and implements effective interventions with families, utilizing advanced strength-based, solution focused strategies.
  • Act as a liaison between families and other community agencies and promote family self-reliance.
  • Establish and implement a family support plan with self-assessments, goals, strategies and activities developed with parents.
  • Utilize developmental assessment tools (ASQ / ASQ-SE) for children and make recommendations to parents.
  • Provide parenting support and child development information (Nurturing Parent Program) 
  • Assist parents with referrals and self-advocacy to community services and resources as required.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a Human Services field, with a minimum of three years of experience working with children and their families is preferred; diploma with additional experience would be considered.
  • Demonstrated proficiency as a Home Visitor, and experience in supporting parents who are raising infants/young children.
  • Proficient in the use of computers including ability to document in a data base and with Microsoft Office.  Strong organizational skills to meet deadlines as set by the Calgary Healthy Families Collaborative.
  • Understanding of how to support families with complex issues, and strong knowledge base re: parent-child attachment, early childhood development, the stresses of parenting, substance abuse, domestic violence, and the dynamics of child abuse and neglect.
  • Experience with early childhood developmental screening, parent mentoring, and crisis intervention; ability to recognize the need for professional intervention.
  • Strong knowledge base re: community resources for children and families, and understanding of CFS child protection and family enhancement services.
  • Ability to work independently in the community providing home-based service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; a second language is an asset.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle and safe driving record, valid ASIST certification, valid First Aid. 
  • Nurturing Parent Program and Ages and Stages training would be an asset. 
  • Able to work 40 hours a week, adaptable to suit program needs, some evening work is required from time to time.
  • Current Police Clearance and Child Intervention Record checks with satisfactory results.
