Harm Reduction Clinician (Registered Nurse)

We are seeking Registered Nurses to assume multiple positions for Harm Reduction Clinicians within our Supervised Consumption Services. Under the direction of the Clinical Lead, this position is responsible for providing public health interventions within a harm reduction model at a supervised consumption site. The role includes comprehensive physical and mental health assessments, distribution of harm reduction supplies, supervised consumption clinical interventions and education, take home naloxone distribution, sexual health and other health education and support, and referrals to other health & social services. Other duties may include immunizations and basic wound care.

Available positions are a combination of full-time, part-time and casual positions.  A flexible schedule and ability to work evenings and weekends is required. Some inner-city travel may be necessary to support business needs. This position will be based from the Calgary office and report directly to the Clinical Lead. A criminal security check, including vulnerable sectors check, will be requested.

Key Accountabilities

Clinical Intervention

  • Provide support and intervention for supervised consumptions services including overdose management (e.g. Naloxone, oxygen, ventilation), prevention and education to clients
  • Initiate emergency response as needed for supervised consumption services
  • Vein care, education, and intervention
  • Maintain client records in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Prepare and maintain statistical data, correspondence reports and other documentation as required
  • Provide basic wound assessment and treatment
  • Provide health and social assessments and/or referrals to other services and supports
  • Assume the role of Charge Nurse in the absence of a Responsible Person in Charge (RPIC)
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of infection control standards throughout the supervised consumption services.

Health Promotion and Education

  • Provide education for the promotion of health through engaging and holistic assessment including the determinants of health from a harm reduction approach
  • Prepare and deliver routine harm reduction presentations and resources to community partners
  • Prepare and deliver harm reduction presentations to local and provincial organizations by request
  • Participate in relevant harm reduction learning opportunities and disseminate new information to team members

Distribution of Harm Reduction Supplies

  • Distribution of consumption and safer sex supplies
  • Provide evidence-based health education and promotion of resources related to take home Naloxone, overdose response, and safer sex practices

Qualifications/Key Competencies

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing
  • Current or eligible registration with College and Association of registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the principles and practices of trauma-informed care and harm reduction approaches
  • Recent experience in public health, addictions and/or emergency services
  • Direct experience in client centered counseling and education, STBBI prevention, treatment and education
  • Direct experience working with people who use drugs and/or people living with HIV/HCV
  • Proven ability to work with diverse populations
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and make independent decisions
  • Knowledge and understanding of addiction, mental health, HIV and hepatitis C
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills
