Grants Officer -  Job Posting with Carthy Foundation

Carthy Foundation is seeking a Grants Officer to join their small, dynamic team.  Located in Calgary, Alberta, Carthy Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation established in 1965.  The foundation funds charitable initiatives across Canada with focused interests in youth (adolescent emotional health and wellness, transitions to employment for youth and young adults), and the environment (urban environmental sustainability and environmentally sustainable agriculture).  The Grants Officer will work closely with the Program Director and will have an interesting and varied range of activities.  The individual will play a key role in advancing the foundation’s impact, will develop strong relationships with colleagues and associates, and will have the opportunity for professional growth through coaching and training.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist in the identification of projects and initiatives for funding consideration; this will include vetting letters of inquiry and making recommendations as well as proactively seeking opportunities in the foundation’s funding areas.
  • Provide overall support during the grant application process.  This could includeassisting the applicant, reviewing proposals, identifying external reviewers, andpreparing and presenting detailed recommendations.
  • Support the monitoring of funded projects; review progress reports, providefeedback, conduct site visits and interviews, and surface and record learnings.
  • Conduct periodic scans to identify key stakeholders and initiatives relevant to the foundations’ funding interests.  This could entail web searches, surveys, key informant interviews, etc.
  • Identify, develop and maintain relationships with a cross section of organizations, experts, and other key stakeholders both locally and nationally.
  • Provide project management support to foundation initiatives, including administrative and financial monitoring, sourcing and managing contracts, organizing meetings and events, and internal monitoring and evaluation.
  • Coordinate a diverse range of events and gatherings.  In some cases this will be an administrative and coordinating role; in other cases it will include a facilitator role.
  • Represent the foundation in meetings with grant applicants or events as required.
  • Oversee the development of an internal quarterly newsletter.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of a variety of reports and materials.
  • Assist with special projects and additional duties as assigned by the President from time to time.
  •  General Requirements

    The ideal candidate will be a university graduate from an accredited institution with 7-9 years of relevant work experience.  A background in youth development or human resources would be an asset.  The applicant will have the following skills and competencies:

  • Superior inter-personal communication skills and a facilitative, empathetic style in dealing with colleagues, applicants, and grantees (in person, on the telephone, and via email).
  • Able to establish long-term, collaborative relationships internally and in the community built on trust, respect, humility and openness.
  • Project management experience, including budgeting, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and financial tracking.
  • Strong researcher; able to synthesize large volumes of information and prepare clear reports.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills, including experience with diverse groups.
  • Strong coordination and administrative skills.
  • Solid computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Proactive, resourceful, reliable and able to work as a self-sufficient member of a small team.
  • Enthusiastic and curious about social and environmental issues and committed to making positive change.
  • Impeccable integrity, discretion and confidentiality.
  • Willingness to complete a criminal and credit background check.
