Burns Memorial Fund (BMF) operates a private charitable foundation that works to meet the health, education and recreation needs of low-income children and youth in Calgary. The foundation administers its own programs to provide financial assistance to children, youth and their families; allocates funding to Calgary-based charities working with vulnerable children and youth; and participates in community-wide collaborations intended to address the systemic issues that negatively impact low-income children, youth and their families.

About the Position

BMF seeks a versatile and energetic individual to join our team. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Grants Manager will be responsible for a range of duties, playing a key role in advancing the organization’s impact, developing strong relationships with community partners and working directly with students participating in our programs.

Responsibilities and Duties:

The Grants Manager’s main responsibility will be management of the High School Bursaries program. The program supports at-risk grade 12 students to stay in school and graduate by providing them with monthly living allowances and other financial supports. Duties include:

  • Working with the Executive Director to ensure that the program criteria, processes and parameters remain current and relevant
  • Working with high school counsellors and success coaches to promote the program and ensure it is understood by referring professionals
  • Meeting with prospective Bursary recipients and high school counsellors to discuss the application process
  • Reviewing applications and making funding recommendations
  • Maintaining regular contact with recipients and their counsellors to address issues or concerns
  • Maintaining files and financial and database records
  • Overseeing program evaluation and report writing

BMF also administers several collaborative funding initiatives, involving multiple partners. The Grants Manager will work closely with the Executive Director to ensure the success of those initiatives. This includes:

  • Contributing to the creation and implementation of funding processes (e.g. development of applications, decision-making criteria and funding contracts)
  • Acting as liaison with funding partners and funded projects
  • Monitoring funded projects and supporting contract compliance
  • Providing administrative support to granting and partnership committees
  • Maintaining files and financial and database records
  • Overseeing program evaluation and report writing
  • Contributing to the development of new funding partnerships or collaborations

 Experience and Skills:

The ideal candidate will bring a mix of the following competencies and skills to our team:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • A minimum of five years of experience working in a related field (e.g. grant-making, youth development, education, community development, the non-profit sector)
  • Ability to work well with diverse stakeholders, including students, school personnel, grantees, community partners and philanthropic leaders
  • Ability to establish and maintain long-term collaborative relationships and partnerships in the community
  • Strong organizational skills, including facility with file management, report-writing, budgets and accounting requirements
  • Ability to work independently, as well as within a small team
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid computer and administrative skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Databases)
  • Driver’s license and vehicle, as frequent school visits are required.
