Grants Coordinator

The Alberta Law Foundation seeks a grants coordinator to join its grants management team for a 14-month contract.

The Alberta Law Foundation is an independent non-profit grant-making foundation that supports programs and projects that enhance the justice system and individuals’ access to legal services. For over forty years, the Foundation has provided funding to non-profit organizations engaged in legal research and law reform, public legal education and the provision of legal advice, representation and support to individuals who cannot afford a lawyer.  

The Grants Coordinator reports to the Executive Director in carrying out the Foundation’s grant-making program.

 Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to enquiries about the availability of funding.
  • Assume responsibility for a portfolio of grants.
  • Assist applicants in developing grant proposals including identification of needs, desired outcomes, strategies and budgets;
  • Review and assess grant applications;
  • Prepare information summaries on grant proposals for the ALF Board;
  • Analyze and monitor funded programs and projects including semi-annual reports, financial statements, outcome measures, and prepare grantee performance summaries for the Executive Director and the Board;
  • Work with grantees and potential grantees to develop new or enhance existing programs for funding;
  • Work with grantees to build capacity in particular areas such as program design and evaluation, governance and financial accountability, where appropriate;
  • Engage stakeholders to assess needs and identify priorities for legal services and programs in the province;
  • Communicate with grantees, stakeholders and the Alberta public;
  • Assist with other organizational duties and special projects as needed;
  • Work collaboratively as part of the ALF team to keep an open dialogue with grantees and other stakeholders, and facilitate the grant process;
  • Occasional travel will be required.

Education, Training and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the non-profit, human services, education, law or justice sector, in a position requiring critical thinking and analysis.
  • Experience managing complex information, and ability to distill it into a succinct statement of the essential elements.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong project management skills.
  • Proven ability to critically analyze budgets and organization financial statements.
  • Understanding of program design/development.
  • Familiarity with program evaluation principles and processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience writing or assessing grant applications would be an asset.
  • Experience working in one or more areas of the Foundation’s grant objectives or with vulnerable individuals (facing barriers such as physical, economic, cultural or language) would be an asset.

This is a full-time contract position located in Calgary, Alberta.
