Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Donor Relations Manager, the Grant Writer is responsible for facilitating research, developing, reviewing, and editing grant proposals; conducting basic research for potential funding sources and maintaining databases while supporting faculty and administration in developing proposals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates, reviews, and edits grant proposals; conducts library and electronic research; compiles data; inputs and retrieves data via computer.
  • Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources.
  • Conducts research on potential funding sources; maintains contact with external agencies.
  • Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
  • Develops and transforms ideas into grant proposals, serves as a liaison between Inn from the Cold and grant agencies.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of particular areas involved in identifying and soliciting grants; may collaborate with various internal departments.
  • May coordinate project activities; prepares and processes letters and correspondence, presentation materials, and manuscripts; maintains funding opportunity databases, activity tracking system, and related confidential files.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Research governmental, foundation and corporate grants
  • Research grant programs and plans and write funding applications.
  • Conduct interdepartmental meetings to identify and prioritize project needs, coordinate and research grant preparation assignments.
  • Write or assist project managers in writing applications.
  • Edit draft applications for accuracy, completeness and clarity and submittal of all applications in accordance with grant/loan requirements
  • Provide timely advice and information on funding opportunities, requirements and procedures; collaborates in defining and implementing project funding strategies.
  • Provide assistance in resolving issues and conflicts with funding agencies.
  • Prepare grant applications for submittal and prepare quarterly or annual reports as required by granting agencies.
  • Coordinate and plan funding program activities, including the prioritization, planning and scheduling of activities to guide program efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Review revenues and expenditures, project status, to ensure proper expenditures are made for Federal grant projects.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with funders
  • Write, submit and track grant applications
  • Generate compelling narratives for funding applications and reports
  • Develop project descriptions, evaluation plans
  • Gather budget materials for applications and ensure compliance with funding requirements
  • Oversee reporting requirements for grants and contracts.
  • Handle confidential financial records and grant materials with great discretion
  • Regularly report in writing about all grant search and application activities to Managing Director
  • Analyze new strategies for income and provide written recommendations
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • BA Degree in English or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite and Excel experience is essential.
  • 2 - 5 years of experience in grant/loan funding or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the skills knowledge and ability necessary to perform the tasks.
  • Experience in a government agency preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Raisers Edge software an asset
  • Knowledge of Donor Bill of Rights and Fundraising Code of Ethics required
  • AFP membership preferred
  • Knowledge of grant application process and grant writing as well as, writing funding applications, donor impact reports.
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines for grant opportunities.
  • Ability to take initiative and utilize innovative techniques and ingenuity in preparing grant/loan applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact with various departments, as required.
  • Ability to research grant and foundation opportunities.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and evaluate a variety of data
