Financial Controller

Description: The Controller is employed by HSCA, and is governed by the Mission Statement and works within the policies and procedures of the Association.

HSCA is a non-profit that operates on the leading edge of community-serving organizations in Calgary. We champion programs and initiatives that strengthen the capacity of residents to have meaningful engagements with each other and the world around them. To achieve these goals, HSCA supports a wide variety of services and activities in Hillhurst-Sunnyside, including: community development programs for vulnerable Calgarians, affordable childcare, recreational programs, markets and events, and supporting residents in advocating for the future design of their community. 

 

 

Reports to:  Executive Director

 

Goal: To maintain accurate financial records of the Association, to build and monitor annual budgets, to provide timely reporting and to advise management on the financial position of the Association.

 

Qualifications:

-          Qualified accounting background supplemented by post-secondary degree or diploma and three to five or more years experience in related management work

-          An understanding of not-for-profit organizations (experience in a not-for-profit setting is preferred)

-          Strong working knowledge of full-cycle accounting and Canadian payroll policies and practices

-          Experience with Simply Accounting (SAGE) preferred

-          Experience with the use of Microsoft Office applications

Duties:

Financial
  • Preparation of annual financial statements and reports for the board, funders and other stakeholders as required,
  • Implement, monitor and ensure internal controls are in place,
  • Prepare all regulatory filings and corporate tax returns,
  • Oversee the preparation of the annual budget,
  • Prepare budget forecasts for the agency,
  • Administer financial reports related to Breakopen and Casino,
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and budget to actual reports for the Association,
  • Prepare ad-hoc financial reports for the executive director, board of directors, staff, and external clients, customers, or agencies as required,
  • Oversee the entire payroll function and respond to inquiries from Canada Revenue Agency,
  • Oversee A/R and A/P ledgers, general ledger, monthly intergroup charges, bank deposits and reconciliation,
  • Attend all finance committee meetings (evenings),
  • Review and maintain processes to ensure the integrity of the financial information systems,
  • Prepare all cheques for signature with appropriate supporting documentation,
Administrative
  • Staff resource to the Finance Committee,
  • Participate as part of the senior staff, reporting on financial issues and participate in the decision making process for administrative matters of the Association,
  • Responsible for the registration of group health benefits for staff,
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned by the Executive Director
