Finance Lead

Position Summary

The role of Finance Lead at HUC is a critical hands-on position with oversight and leadership responsibilities in all areas of finance and accounting. The successful applicant will be responsible for processing daily transactions, preparing all financial statements, and assisting with the preparation of annual and long range plans. You will administer the payroll, and engage and advise the Board on a wide variety of finance matters. You will attend and report to monthly finance committee meetings and liaise and advise all other organizational committees. The Finance Lead reports to the Lead Minister, with indirect accountability to the Finance Committee of the Board.

As the most senior accountant on staff, you will have a mandate to continuously assess internal processes and champion improvements where it is deemed important. Your work with the Board will expose you to some of the most senior level strategic decision-making, and your work and reports will be relied upon to support our continued evolution in the months and years to come. All employees and volunteers at HUC are stewards of the church with fiduciary responsibility to the Board, and ultimately, the congregation.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Degree in Economics or Business with Accounting or Finance Major;
  • Professional accounting designation preferred but will consider years of experience in lieu of designation
  • Minimum 5 years’ related work experience in Financial Management/Accounting reporting to the Executive Director or Board of a not-for-profit organization
  • Knowledge of and experience with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (“ASNPO”) and CRA donation receipting requirements is essential; familiarity with Alberta Employment Standards, Simply Accounting, Power Church, and ADP Payroll System is an asset
  • Advanced skills in Excel and Microsoft word required

Accounting and Record-keeping

  • Manage banking activity, including AP and AR transactions (cash handling, cheque processing, etc.) and maintain primary relationship with the bank
  • Recruit and train volunteers on cash handling (Sundays and at special events) to ensure safekeeping of cash, credit card slips, and supporting documentation
  • Maintain accounting records (journal entries and supporting back-up), and prepare monthly financial statements
  • Maintain church property tax records, insurance and related documentation
  • Manage annual review/audit process

Payroll and Benefits

  • Process monthly payroll with external payroll service provider
  • Ensure compliance with Alberta Employment Standards and HUC-UCC policies on vacation pay, statutory holiday compensation, benefit eligibility, and issuance of T4s, T4As and ROEs
  • Work closely with Ministry & Personnel committee to understand and implement employment contracts

Fund Development and Stewardship

  • Maintain donor records and process donations, issue tax receipts, and conduct stewardship trend analysis for the Lead Minister and relevant Board committees
  • Ensure compliance with CRA tax receipting for cash, gifts of securities, and gifts-in-kind with timely issuance of tax receipts
  • Ensure compliance with federal CRA T3010, GST reporting and any applicable reporting as a provincially registered not-for-profit, both for HUC and any entities under its control
  • Support year-round stewardship strategies, including requests for congregational support, special campaigns, and donor recognition

Budgeting, Financial Planning and Reporting

  • Prepare operating and capital budgets for annual approval
  • Review requests for program funding, assess against budget and attain necessary approvals
  • Report monthly to the Finance Committee and quarterly to the Board on actual vs budget variance analysis (year-to- date financial performance)
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial reports to the congregation

Organizational Leadership

  • Oversee all finance volunteer activities
  • Provide fiduciary advice to the Lead Minister and/or Board as requested
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and participate in organizational leadership discussions; seek opportunities for the church to live HUC values
  • Communicate and engage with congregants, in particular newcomers and large donors
