Family Violence Broker (Male)

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS), in partnership with Calgary and Area Children’s Services (CS), have established a Cultural Brokerage Program with the overall objective to increase collaboration, engagement and partnership with culturally diverse communities in Calgary.

The CCIS Cultural Brokerage Program (CCBP) is a team of 12 diverse professionals. The cultural brokers are located in CS multi-service team locations with the mandate of providing holistic settlement services to vulnerable children and families new to Canada.

Reporting to the Cultural Brokerage Program Coordinator, the Family Violence Specialist will support immigrant and refugee families, ansd perpetrators, experiencing family violence and abuse through a strength-based approach. The Family Violence Specialist will also collaborate with other community agencies to provide information, education, and guidance, and to increase the awareness around the issue of family violence in the context of immigration and cultural diversity.




  • Facilitate communication between immigrant families and CFS caseworkers through language support and cultural interpretation.
  • Educate  perpetrators of family violence on legislation, appropriate parenting, system navigation.
  • Oversee the CCIS Temporary Accommodation for Men Project.
  • Support the cultural capacity of Children’s Services.
  • Provide counseling to immigrant families affected by family violence.
  • Provide intensive case management to domestic abuse victims and their families. Services include intake, assessments, service planning, outreach, and group & individual support services.
  • Act as a liaison to internal CCIS programs and Brokers supporting family violence clients.
  • Develop, implement and facilitate violence education and awareness workshops.
  • Provide crisis and family support to immigrant families or individuals affected by family violence.
  • Share information and refer clients to appropriate community service providers.
  • Support and enhance the capacity of the Cultural Brokerage team, and internal CCIS staff, around issues related to family violence.
  • Develop partnerships and advocate for victims of abuse coming from different cultural backgrounds in reaching the appropriate services and resources





  • Bachelor of Social Work or related – preferred ACSW registration.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the principles of sound therapeutic practices with victims of domestic violence.
  • Past experience in the settlement and integration process of immigrants.
  • Knowledge of child-development, parent education, and the social services system in Calgary.
  • Knowledge/experience with cross cultural communication cultural diversity.
  • Understanding of the service needs of various community and ethno cultural groups.
  • Excellent organization skills and self-starting tendencies
  • Knowledge and understanding of Social Work practices in a Canadian context.
  • Preference will be given to individuals connected to ethno-cultural communities and groups.
  • Preference will be given to candidates fluent in both English and another language representative of the target groups being served.
  • As travel is required, the successful candidate must have access to a vehicle as well as a valid Alberta drivers license.
