Family Therapist

Family Therapist (20 hrs/week)

Name of Position: Family Therapist, Centre for Refugee Resilience

Responsible to:     CDIS Manager and Centre for Refugee Resilience Team Lead

Functional Statement:

The Family Therapist acts as an integral team member in building resilience with refugees and immigrants who have experienced trauma, through coordinated community, social, and mental health support.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

●      As part of an interdisciplinary team, provide counselling focused on the family system using trauma-informed and evidence based treatment specific to client needs

●      Provide culturally competent services to a range of diverse clientele.

●      In collaboration with case coordinators, complete screening and intakes for families who may benefit from counselling

●      Provide continuous assessment and treatment planning for family counselling clients who have been affected by trauma

●      Provide consultative services to address changing needs of family counselling clients (for clients, team members, and other professionals as needed) and participate in case conferences as needed

●      Assess need, and provide supported referrals to other services, both internally and externally when clients would benefit

●      Maintain documentation in accordance to legal and ethical standards of best practice.

●      Provide statistical and outcome information on the therapy program for clinical evaluation, funding applications, reports, and research

●      Work collaboratively with a diverse and multi-disciplinary team within CCIS

●      Participate in case consultations and clinical supervision sessions with other team members

●      Develop and review goals towards personal, professional, and organizational development

●      Work in accordance with professional Code of Ethics of governing body

●      Participate in public education and promotion of the program, including development and presentation of workshops for community and volunteers, as time allows

●      Travel offsite to serve clients, as needed (primarily in community agencies or other related settings)


●      Masters degree in Psychology, social work or other counselling related field

●      Registered with the appropriate professional association

●      3-5 years clinical experience

●      Experience in working systemically with families, addressing trauma and other issues prevalent to the refugee population (Depression, anxiety, chronic pain)

●      Demonstrated experience providing culturally competent clinical services among ethnically diverse population

●      Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes occasional evenings to accommodate clients

●      There is a potential for supervision with a Registered Psychologist

●      Must have a valid driver’s license and own reliable transportation.

●      Ability to communicate in a second language considered an asset
