The Children's Cottage Society of Calgary provides crisis care, shelter, respite and support programs for vulnerable children and their families. To achieve our vision of “Safe Children in Healthy Families,” we are looking for an experienced and professional individual to join the Brenda’s House program for families experiencing homelessness as a Shelter Support Worker. Brenda’s House provides 24/7 shelter and care for 14 families at a time in a spacious, home-like and family-friendly setting located in Killarney.


  • Diploma in a human service field.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with families with complex needs. Experience in a residential program setting is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR (level B) certification
  • Understanding of solution-focused support, family homelessness issues and community resources for families.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competence with computers, including the ability to document using a client database.
  • Understanding regarding serving the needs of families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must complete a Police Information Check and a Child Intervention Record Check with satisfactory results.



a)    Respond to calls from families experiencing homelessness or imminent loss of housing, offering supportive and non-judgmental assistance and information regarding shelter access and community resources.

b)    Over the phone, screen for eligibility with respect to Brenda’s House and other agency services.

c)    Document all calls and follow-up contacts.


a)    Work collaboratively with Family Support Key Workers, Case Managers, and Child Development Specialists.

b)    Manage resident access to facility, and greet all visitors and volunteers at the door.

c)    Provide support to the team by scanning / faxing documents, filing and following up on referrals.

d)    Monitor when vacant rooms are ready for occupancy and organize admissions for new placements.

e)    Keep the communication binder up to date, and help distribute and track petty cash and gift cards.


a)    Respond to family questions and requests for support regarding residence-related issues.

b)    Assist families with transportation needs by distributing bus tickets and providing taxi vouchers.

c)    Direct families towards relevant community services and resources as needed.
