PATCH – Patchworks Education and Employment Facilitator

We are currently hiring for a Regular, Full-time, Patchworks Education and Employment Facilitator (EEF) for our Patch program. The EEF component to our program is called PatchWorks.

Patch is best described as a neighbourhood Hub that provides a wide range of integrated services to children, families and their community in Calgary Housing Company complexes and surrounding neighbourhoods in Calgary. The central goals of the hubs are to decrease poverty, increase health and wellness of children and families, and build thriving communities.

This position is one aspect of Patch’s ‘Systems of Care’ approach and extends the in-program continuum of services. The focus of Patchworks is to provide information, support and coaching to residents who are interested in exploring and achieving their vocational and educational goals. This position requires a culturally sensitive individual who is proactive, creative, flexible and self-directed.

Duties:

  • Provide career and education support services to persons served that live within Patch site-specific catchment areas.
  • In collaboration with person served, site staff and partnering agencies/companies, provide person served with an employment/education-focused service plan.
  • Provide support and coaching to adult students and groups across a range of learning and educational needs (basic literacy skills to post-secondary programs), including accessing funding.
  • In collaboration with Patch Community and Family Facilitators, identify psychosocial barriers that prevent the persons served from achieving success in their employment and educational goals.
  • Construct resumes and cover letters with persons served and provide feedback/consultation related to strategizing for successful job applications and interviews.
  • Assist persons served to “translate” their life experience into skills pertinent to their employment pursuits on their resumes.
  • Identify job training opportunities, colleges, and other educational programs in the community that are appropriate for persons served.
  • Access and network with community resources to aide participants in their job search, job retention, and/or reemployment efforts.
  • Teach skills, including basic computer literacy, so persons served can progress to job searching independently.
  • Provide job retention support to persons served in situational internship/employment experiences.
  • Utilize screening and evaluation tools and work with data tracking systems to ensure that persons served related information is appropriately understood, maintained, and reported.
  • Maintain the Patch office (help with light cleaning) and Patch site coverage when necessary.
  • Program development and facilitating groups.
  • Supporting Patch programming and events, including working with children.
  • Participation on internal and external committees; liaising with community partners.
  • Supporting Financial Empowerment strategies / interventions (example financial coaching -training available).
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in human services or social sciences. Completion of a Career Development Certificate a definite asset.
  • Experience working with persons served in a community based setting including supporting people who are economically challenged and from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience supporting persons served to identify and overcome barriers to employment/education, including resume writing.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation.
  • Proficient use of computer programs, databases and evaluation systems.
  • Strong engagement, interpersonal, and networking skills.
  • Superior written and verbal skills.
  • Interest in working in an environment that is fun and encouraging of self-exploration.
  • Appreciative of the diverse and unique needs of children, youth, adults and families.
  • Ability to contribute positively to team morale. 
  • Strong awareness of, and ability to manage, ones own emotions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Excellent problem solving, capacity building, and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of issues related to poverty, immigration/integration, employment standards, and local employment and educational resources.
  • Ability to speak a second language an asset.
  • Willingness to use own vehicle and ability to travel to all four Patch sites.
  • Valid Drivers License and reliable transportation.
