Position Summary: 

Reporting to and working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director holds the key leadership position for Inn from the Cold (IFTC). The Executive Director is responsible for day to day operations and the long-term mandate, which is to develop and position the organization to be a recognized leader in providing support and care for families experiencing homelessness. A transformative leader, the Executive Director will inspire their Board, stakeholders and staff to support this mandate.

The Executive Director will be a visible, proactive leader in the community. No longer just an emergency shelter, IFTC is committed to address the root causes of family homelessness. Working with local and national agencies, the Executive Director will develop a center of excellence in family homelessness which will allow IFTC to move closer to its vision of a community where no child or family is homeless. The Executive Director must be a role model of the values, vision and mission of the Inn.

Core Competencies 

Strategic Leadership

  • In partnership with the Board of Directors, develop and continually review the three-year strategic plan and annual business plans;
  • Provide leadership to achieve successful implementation of the strategic and annual Business Plans by monitoring, measuring, and accomplishing the strategic outcomes as outlined in each plan;
  • Create a shared vision where all members of the team have a sense of ownership and purpose aligned to overall organizational goals;
  • Commit to continuous improvement and assessment, and determining and executing any needed changes to organizational structure;
  • Foster a culture of innovation and creativity, and ‘getting things done’; and,
  • Inspire others through leading by example, and successfully encourage and foster the same operating style in others.

Business Leadership

  • Develop an annual business plan to guide IFTC on the implementation of the strategic plan;
  • Ensure effective and efficient operations and management of all IFTC programs and services;
  • Ensuring IFTC’s policies and procedures are appropriate and aligned with the goals and objectives of the organization;
  • Ensure a comprehensive, inclusive and transparent process of business planning; and,
  • Provide business leadership to all aspects of the organization including development planning, community consultation and the management of third party consultants and advisors.

Fiscal Leadership

  • Develop an entrepreneurial approach to IFTC’s business;
  • Manage resources effectively and efficiently to maintain a strong financial and professional position;
  • Lead funding negotiations with the Provincial Government;
  • Act in a key role as required for resource development;
  • Ensure the prudent and cost-effective use of the Inn’s limited resources;
  • Review and update appropriate control mechanisms, as needed, to identify and mitigate risks to achieving the Plan; and,
  • Advise the Board and act upon matters raised by the external auditor.

Stakeholder and Government Relations

  • Develop and maintain proactive, effective working relationships with external stakeholders;
  • Develop strong relationships with existing and new agencies to become a partner of choice for funders and agencies;
  • Participate on key regional, provincial, and national committees that relate to the work of IFTC; and,
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with the Provincial Government.  

Requirements

  • A post-secondary degree in a relevant field combined with a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Evidence of past success working with community partners leading collaborative solutions initiatives;
  • Demonstrated experience leading large complex, cross sector, multi-stakeholder projects aimed at supporting homeless families and ending family homelessness;
  • Demonstrated experience providing financial management of a complex organization;
  • Ability to think strategically and develop long-term plans aimed at ending homelessness for families while ensuring that the IFTC remains responsive to the needs of those families continuing to experience homelessness
  • Demonstrated fund raising experience
  • Extensive experience building effective relationships with diverse groups of individuals, including senior executives, boards of directors, government, community leaders, and staff;
  • Demonstrated expertise recruiting, retaining, developing, coaching and mentoring high performing teams; 
  • An understanding of board governance and a proven track record of working constructively with boards of directors;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to vulnerable persons, and a commitment to ensuring an inclusive environment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the complex, systemic and societal barriers impacting homeless populations, as well as an understanding of the population being served, including over-representation of sub-population groups.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience within a not-for-profit organization in leadership positions.
