ESL Adventure! Leader Position

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) is a nonprofit organization that provides settlement and integration services to all immigrants and refugees in Calgary and Southern Alberta.  With over 30 years of solid community experience, 70 active programs, and comprehensive wraparound support, CCIS ensures that our services respond to the needs of ethnically diverse communities within Calgary and area. 

The ESL Adventure! Leader position is to help engage recently arrived newcomer children (ages 6-12) in an after school ESL program.  This is a unique and exciting program that helps newcomer kids succeed in school by improving English through experiential learning and recreation.

Terms of Employment:   10 hours per week (Monday-Thursday, 4pm-6pm, plus 2 hours prep time), from January 15 – June 7, 2018. Field trips may be scheduled in advance for additional hours.

Location:  Killarney (Monday/Wednesday) & Whitehorn  (Tuesday/Thursday)

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and facilitate ESL activities  for a group of 15-20 children, ages 6-12
  • Work closely with partner (City of Calgary) to ensure consistency throughout the program
  • Encourage positive behavior and learning experiences in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • Ensure a healthy, positive, and safe environment
  • Supervise children during off-site field trips

Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching ESL to children
  • Experience working with children in a recreational or play-based setting
  • A current criminal records check and vulnerable sector search
  • A genuine interest and experience in working with school age children
  • The ability to form caring, responsive relationships with children
  • A positive and friendly attitude
  • The ability to work in a team environment
