Employment Specialist

Employment Specialist – Ref. No. 18008

 Temporary Position (10 months)

HomeBase – Housing First Employment Initiative Project

The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.

The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.

Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy to access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness.  Using a multidisciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of healthcare that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to its two Health Centers, we run a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Community Dental Bus, four Housing Programs, a Breast Feeding Clinic, a Community Food Centre and a Bottles4Health Program.

We are currently seeking an Employment Specialist for our Housing First Employment Initiative Project. The pilot project is funded through Employment and Social Development Canada’s Innovative Solutions to Homelessness, and is intended to explore means to support high acuity formerly homeless individuals to return to the workforce through targeted programming and individualized supports. This position ends December 31st, 2018. The Employment Specialist will work on the Pre-Employment Program and will report to the Project Lead. The program is a slow methodical approach to support participants to re-enter the workforce. It begins by focusing on participants’ soft and essential skills. This will lead to more tangible employment readiness topics. Participants will then have an opportunity for a volunteer placement. Afterwards, the program will aid ready participants in applying for competitive employment, while repeating courses for those who need more time. The program spans from January to November 2018. The Employment Specialist will help plan and facilitate groups, assertively engage with participants and perform job coaching meetings on and off site.

What you will do:

  • Plan and facilitate a range of pre-employment groups that address the needs of the participants
  • Conduct one-on-one job coaching meetings to help create individualized employment plans
  • Motivate and encourage participant engagement in the program
  • Support participants in their job search
  • Support participants and employers during volunteer placements
  • Provide ongoing support as the participants begin work
  • Responsible for providing a range of services to participants to support their return to employment
  • Log daily notes on participant interactions
  • Conduct participant baseline and ongoing assessments and adjust programming accordingly
  • Support the creation of the Housing First Employment Model by providing feedback on groups, workshops and coaching sessions

What you bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree or related work experience and education
  • Class 5 drivers licence, along with current first aid and CPR
  • Experience with job coaching
  • Proven ability to support participants in finding employment, volunteer and educational opportunities
  • Previous experience working with people with mental health issues, substance abuse and trauma
  • Experience planning employment or skills workshops
  • Strong group facilitation and public speaking skills
  • Patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion and sensitivity to persons who have been chronically homeless and struggling with multiple barriers to employment
  • Previous experience working within a training program focused on workplace attachment
  • Exceptional verbal communication and writing skills
  • Ability to research best practices and evidence based approaches to combat employment barriers
  • Ability to collect and manage statistical information related to vocational activity
  • ·          Availability to join The Alex by March 15th or sooner
