Employment Counsellor

Position Title:                               Employment Counsellor

                                                        (Two positions)                 

Responsible to:                           Employment Services Team Lead


Functional Statement:

The Employment Counsellor provides individual/ group employment counselling and career planning services to newcomers residing in Calgary and area. Highlights of the position include: needs determination assessment, training on the most recent job search strategies, resume/ cover letter/ interview preparation, group facilitation, marketing, employer recruitment, referrals to employers, other programs, services and job placement.


  • Identify the needs of clients through an employability assessment and develop strategies for addressing those needs.
  • Provide direct employment coaching and career planning services and assist clients with job search, resume writing and interview preparation.
  • Respond to client’s needs by referring them to other programs and services.
  • Facilitate job search workshops.
  • Prepare and maintain required client documentation and reporting.
  • Network within the community by working in collaboration with employers and other service providers.
  • Participates in work related interagency meeting, committees and other outreach activities
  • Participates in professional development opportunities
  • Develops job leads and contacts to assist clients in obtaining employment
  • Develops and effectively monitor the client database
  • Compiles data and submit monthly, quarterly final and annual reports


Post-secondary degree in Psychology, Education, Business or Marketing  plus related industry experience

Excellent counselling skills along with well-developed needs assessment, analytical and facilitation skills

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Experience working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds/ appreciation of cultural diversity

Computer literate

Excellent team player

Strong organizational and time management skills

Certificate in Career Development will be an asset

Must provide a criminal record check
