Employment Coach

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Employment Coach is a city-wide leader in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in Edmonton in finding and keeping sustainable employment. The Coach works collaboratively with other members of the Support Services team, employers and other Mustard Seed departments as well as external agencies to break the stigmas of homelessness and help community participants achieve their employment goals. The Employment Coach is an exceptional liaison to employers, is effective in uncovering employment opportunities and excels at providing front-end and follow-up support to community participants. When applicable, the Employment Coach connects participants to other agencies for appropriate support.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively and competently use the Supported Employment model to move community participants towards The Mustard Seed’s employment initiatives;
  • Collaborate closely with the Community Programs Manager to link guests to potential employers;
  • Make face-to-face contacts with potential employers each week;
  • Connect regularly with existing employers to advocate for clients and foster relationships;
  • Use Motivational Interviewing to help guests progress toward their employment goals;
  • Set personal, financial and employment goals with guests and review regularly;
  • Provide support and crisis intervention to both community participants and employers as necessary;
  • Document all community participant interactions and progress;
  • Work collaboratively with other Mustard Seed program areas as well as external agencies and refer community participants to their case managers when needed;
  • Meet weekly with Community Programs Manager to evaluate your progress;
  • Attend meetings and training as required;
  • Involve volunteers in all of the above.
  • Responsible for the administration of the Old Strathcona Clean (OSC) program and working alongside OSC participants;
  • Guide, facilitate, and assist in the development of the OSC program according to the policies and procedures of the organization and the contractual obligations
  • Operate OSC in a fiscally responsible manner through budget management
  • Give leadership to the participants, staff and volunteers
  • Build and nurture relationships with external partners and stakeholders
  • Other duties as required;

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • A demonstrated understanding of the issues contributing to poverty
  • Degree/Diploma in Human Services or Business field or 2 years related work experience
  • Strong working knowledge in Microsoft Office Programs (i.e., Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.)
  • Valid Driver’s License (Class 5)
  • Reliable vehicle required (Parking provided, mileage reimbursement)
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team
  • Ability to accomplish goals with minimal supervision
  • Eager to take initiative in developing new relationships with potential employers
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, applied time management, strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent de-escalation and conflict resolution skills
  • Highly motivated, compassionate, creative and responsible person
  • First Aid and Suicide Intervention Training an asset

 

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Working out of multiple locations including the CSC, Street Church Drop-In and The Neighbour Centre as well as in the community
  • Considerable periods of standing, walking—indoors and outdoors—working alongside participants in the Old Strathcona Clean Program
  • Moderate physical and mental  effort
  • Some evening or weekend work will be required
  • Working in and amongst a diverse group of individuals
  • Fast paced and demanding work environment
