The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.

Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy to access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness.  Using a multidisciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of healthcare that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to its two Health Centers, we run a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Community Dental Bus, three Housing Programs, a Breast Feeding Clinic, a Community Food Centre and a Bottles4Health Program. 

We are currently seeking an experienced Director of Health Programs to lead our health care programs within our organization. The successful candidate will be comfortable writing funding proposals, reporting to funders and establishing solid working relationships with community partners. You have managed large projects from start-up phase to implementation through to evaluation. You have an understanding of the Community Health Centre model of care and the challenges of working within that model. You are familiar working with large budgets and understand the significance of staying on-time and on-budget. 

This position will be accountable for clinical operations for all health programs at The Alex including; Family Health Program, Seniors Health Program, Youth Health Program, and the three mobile services.  The Director will lead a team of medical, clinical and administrative staff.  Working as part of the senior leadership team this individual will actively contribute to the development of future programs. 

The successful candidate will have the following characteristics and qualifications: 

  • A Masters Degree in Public Health desired, however, a degree in an associated field will also be considered;
  • Five or more years of experience in a senior management role in a healthcare environment is required;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and create strong relationships;
  • Be self-directed and highly motivated, and have exemplary leadership and team-building skills.
  •  Have experience working with physicians, and other professional and non-professional staff in a program management model of service delivery;
  • Have experience with developing collaborative relationships with external partners and agencies is required.
  • Comfortable with all forms of communication and actively embraces social media
