Development Coordinator

Development Coordinator 

Reporting to the Manager, Communications & Development (C&D) and in support of the Vision and Mission of the Calgary Food Bank, the Development Coordinator is responsible for managing and stewarding the individual, planned and non-corporate foundation giving program at the Calgary Food Bank.

Primary responsibilities:

 Middle/major gifts (50%) 

  • Lead, develop, manage and execute strategies that attract, grow and retain individual and non-corporate foundation contributors for gifts, grants and planned gifts.
  • Plan retention focused donor engagement and stewardship programs.
  • Work individually and collaboratively to meet personal and departmental goals and timelines (project management)
  • Plan, implement and evaluate strategies and components of giving programs (e.g.: direct mail, personal visits, grant writing, case for support and other campaigns and activities).
  • Plan, implement and evaluate strategies and components of a legacy/grant giving program.
  • Guide and participate in the administration of gifts-in-kind (e.g.: securities, insurance) and Estate files.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with volunteers, donors, staff, other organizations and the public
  • Meet personal, departmental and organizational goals and timelines.
  • Team player, able to foster strong collaborative internal and interdepartmental relationships.
  • Ability and flexibility to work with other team members as required.
  • Work with the Communication and Development Manager to develop content and collateral. Build cases for support.
  • Develop methods to demonstrate impact of gifts and ensure donors are kept up to date on developments at the Calgary Food Bank. 

Foundation fundraising (35%) 

  • Actively work to establish long-term partnerships and strengthen existing relationships with individuals and non-corporate foundations that will result in funding for the Calgary Food Bank’s immediate and long-term goals.
  • Develop proposals for foundation prospects and leverage foundation goals and preferences in conjunction with Calgary Food Bank goals.
  • Effective case development, grant writing, and donor reports. 

Administration/other (15%) 

  • Develop and maintain donor records in and in coordination with the database administrator related to your portfolio. Create reports that reflect portfolio activity and progress.
  • Guide input of data for data management to plan donor strategy that includes cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, events, newsletters and other engagement.
  • Public presentations in collaboration with other staff and/or volunteers as appropriate.
  • Conduct Food Bank tours.
  • Manage and train volunteers for thank you phone calls to donors.
  • Assist or lead in planning and running Calgary Food Bank events as required.
  • Provide donor analytics for Management and Communications and Development team.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities pertinent individual/planned/foundation giving.
  • Other duties as required and assigned.

  • In addition to these qualifications, the ideal candidate will be creative, organized, strategic, and collegial; A self-starter with a sense of urgency and a bias toward execution. Must have the ability to be flexible and open to new ideas. A sense of humor and positive attitude are essential. 

Education and experience required: 

  • Communications, Marketing, Business or a related post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five plus years of experience in developing and executing strategies that attract, grow and retain external customers, donors and partnerships.
  • Experience in asks, assessing capacity through prospect research, and managing donor relations.
  • Thorough knowledge of CRA gifts/contribution regulations and processes.
  • CFRE designation is considered an asset.
  • Five plus years of experience or knowledge of the not for profit sector.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and own vehicle.

Working conditions and physical requirements if any: 

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment and may require occasional visits to the warehouse. The qualified candidate must be open to working outside of normal business hours and weekends.  Some lifting (30 lbs or less) required. A reliable source of transportation and driver’s license are required.
  • This is a full-time, 37.5 hour per week position. The hours of this role may vary, and the candidate must be open to evening and weekend work with advance notice.
