Full Time Temporary 1 Year (Maternity Leave Coverage)

The Children’s Cottage Society is a charitable agency established in Calgary in 1986. The Society’s mission is “Preventing harm and neglect to all children and building strong families through support services, respite programs, and crisis nurseries”. Our vision is to achieve “Safe Children in Healthy Families”.

This is a 1 year Temporary position, based on a 40 hour work week.


Organize and participate in daily programming for children:

  • Ensure and help provide quality care for each child in residence.
  • Maintain a safe and nurturing environment for children.
  • Develop a daily plan of activities for the children with the team for child support and child care workers to implement, and individual care plans for children with specific support needs.
  • Ensure that children are assisted to cope with feelings of separation from their parents, and that any behaviour challenges they present are appropriately responded to by the team.
  • Ensure that developmental assessments are completed for children in a timely manner.

Interact with parents:

  • Help respond to Crisis Nursery calls, offering non-judgmental assistance to all families requesting help from the Children’s Cottage.
  • Complete admissions with parents upon arrival and assist with discharge, where needed, in an empathic and supportive manner when Family Support Workers are not available.

Provide a leadership role to the child support and child care staff:

  • Help deliver orientation and training to new staff members, practicum students and volunteers.
  • Provide mentorship, supervision and evaluation to child care staff and practicum students. Ensure that policies, standards of care and proper procedures are maintained.
  • Cultivate a positive and motivational work environment.
  • Oversee and support volunteers as they participate with the team in caring for children.
  • Ensure that proper documentation is maintained in paper files and in the client data base.
  • Interact with Family Support Workers (Intake Workers and Family Coaches): act as liaison between the Child Support team and Family Support team to ensure all relevant child information is shared and continuity of service is maintained.
  • Ensure that On-Call nursing and management support are advised and consulted wherever needed.
  • Communicate with the family’s community support systems including Calgary Child and Family Services.


  • Degree in child care or related human service field; Diploma with additional years of relevant experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of four years’ experience working with infants/young children (up to age 8) and their families.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a supervisory role.
  • Thorough knowledge of early childhood development and experience with Nipissing and ASQ/ASQ-SE developmental screening
  • Understanding of child protection and the Calgary Child and Family Services system.
  • Knowledge of community services and resources for families and young children.
  • Skill with brief solution focused approach to supporting families, crisis intervention, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in use of computers including ability to document using a data base; knowledge of ‘Efforts to Outcomes’ (ETO) client data base is an asset.
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification

Hours: Monday to Friday, 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm. There is an expectation for the Team Lead to work an alternating Monday or Friday shift from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm for paperwork and supervision purposes
