Calgary Legal Guidance (CLG) is a charitable society established in 1972 to provide legal advice and assistance to low-income people with family, criminal, immigration, civil and other poverty law matters that are not covered by Legal Aid.  CLG offers specific programs in the areas of domestic violence, homelessness, seniors’ issues, social benefits and immigration.  Over 4,000 clients are assisted each year by volunteer lawyers at evening clinics, program lawyers, pro bono lawyers, articling students, our advocates and program coordinators.

The Role

This is a legal position reporting and providing mentorship to the Immigration Program Lawyer providing immigration legal services. Reporting to the Immigration Lawyer, the Part Time Immigration Lawyer works closely with the Immigration Program Lawyer, Paralegal/Advocate and Legal Assistant, in addition to working with CLG’s Students-At-Law.

The majority of the work involves working with clients who experience immigration and refugee matters and delivering services through outreach summary advice clinics and direct office based legal services.  This position is also a member of the organization’s Legal Team and therefore works with other lawyers in different areas of practice to ensure a coordinated service delivery model.

This is a part time position working up to twenty one (21) hours per week.  CLG is open to subcontractor/vendor arrangement or an employment arrangement. Typical work hours are office hours (8:30am-4:30pm) however some evening and/or weekend work could be required.  Flexible work hours are available as per our agency policies, and upon approval of the Executive Director.

Primary Functions and Accountabilities 

  • Provide mentorship to the Immigration Program Lawyer on more complex matters or files.
  • Provide consulting and review services to the Immigration Program.
  • Client counselling.
  • Maintain some files in relation to all legal advice given, including drafting submissions, prepare court documents and appear at court as necessary.
  • Oversight of some files, including client management.
  • Some assistance with day-to-day operations, including establishing Program procedures and managing Program files.
  • Assist the Immigration Program Lawyer review legal advice and information provided at volunteer delivered legal clinics and follow up on matters where required when needed.


The Candidate 

The successful candidate will have:

  • A law degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Membership or eligible for membership as a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Experience working with vulnerable and diverse populations.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in and/or primarily practicing within the area of immigration and refugee law.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

  • Ability to identify objectives, set priorities, organize and establish procedures.
  • Exceptional attention to detail to ensure assignments are completed with accuracy.
  • Ability to identify and resolve ethical issues.
