Community Impact Strategist

United Way of Calgary and Area is the largest non-government source of funding for human care and community support programs in the Calgary region. United Way works with its community partners to build sustainable solutions for the future, while providing services today to improve lives of people when they need it most.


United Way of Calgary and Area is looking to fill a full-time position for a Community Impact Strategist to support community investments in the area of addressing poverty to join the Community Impact and Partnership team. This is an exciting opportunity to support the implementation of the United Way Investment Strategy focused on poverty alleviation and prevention.  In keeping with United Way’s commitment to bring people together to solve complex problems, the Community Impact Strategist will ensure local organizers, resident leaders, social agencies, funders and other stakeholders are involved in the Strategy implementation and any resulting initiatives. Key Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Strategy Implementation - Project manage the effective implementation of the investment strategy including the development of a plan that focuses on building partnerships and  facilitating collective contributions to address the identified social issues that underlie the Investment Strategy.
  • Organizational expertise and leadership – Provide organizational leadership in addressing issues related to poverty alleviation and prevention.
  • Sector/Strategic Relationships - Be a primary link to community groups and systems to address existing and emerging social issues related to poverty alleviation and prevention. Build strong and enduring relationships with and amongst community partners to support United Way leadership in the community.
  • Community Leadership - Provide leadership or key linkages to the implementation of strategic community initiatives that align with the Strategy.
  • Leverage Impact - Provide recommendations regarding investments, engagement, policies, and systemic issues in order to create more impact on key areas of the Strategy.
  • Financial Oversight - Facilitate, manage, and coordinate financial resources to key areas of the Strategy.


Experience and Skills:


  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline is an asset.
  • At least 5 years relevant experience working in a leadership position related to addressing poverty
  • At least 3 years relevant experience in strategic leadership, experience in change management and experience in building partnerships to impact social change.
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Experience developing community Strategies to address emerging issues with multi stakeholder involvement
  • Budgeting and financial management skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with groups of multiple stakeholders from different sectors.
  • Understanding of the capacities required to develop a collective measurement process with a group of service providers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
