Community Engagement Coordinator

The position:

Momentum’s success depends on a broad, healthy network of relationships with individuals, organizations and groups that care about making poverty part of Calgary’s past. In this position, you will meet with dozens of groups and individuals at partner organizations to share your knowledge and passion for our work. You will listen carefully for alignment between our goals and those of our partners to identify win-win opportunities to act.

The role brings to life our goal of deepening collaboration with program participants and alumni, by expanding our successful Participant Ambassador program to engage more people in more ways after graduation.

Success depends on a balanced set of skills: Passionate about building relationships of substance, an ability to organize and interpret data to identify opportunities, comfort navigating new and emergent territory, and superb event and hosting skills.

  • This position will advance Momentum’s goal to engage the community in the following ways:
  • Improve how we determine, establish, evaluate and nurture our community partnerships to ensure we are partnering with the right groups to advance our mission.
  • Develop relationships with communities, associations and groups to stay connected to and focused on the changing diversity of the community.
  • Increase the involvement of past participants in organizational planning and governance to ensure our work is guided by individuals who have lived with low incomes.
  • Grow the ambassador programs to engage past participants at Momentum after graduation.
  • Manage all aspects of Momentum’s Volunteer program
  • Host and support events as needed to advance Momentum’s community engagement goals.


Major Responsibilities:


Community Engagement and Partnerships

  • Maintain a strong and positive presence with the community by representing Momentum at community events to individuals and community organizations throughout our network.
  • Ensure Momentum takes action across its operations to welcome, recruit, include and celebrate people of diverse backgrounds and experiences in all its operating and program areas
  • Map Momentum’s existing community partnerships and identify opportunities for meaningful expanded reach
  • Lead annual review and reporting of partnership contracts and reporting on Momentum’s community connections in the annual status report
  • Be the lead ‘meaning-maker’ for our community partnership network, supporting staff to generate insights and to make wise partnership decisions
  • Establish trusted communication channels with respected members of community groups to inform program development and to widen our program intake funnel
  • Represent Momentum at community events and activities as determined; this includes select interagency meetings, resource fairs, and building tours
  • Lead Christmas Open House, AGM Annual Celebration and other community events as determined
  • Conduct Community Connections orientations for staff


  • Lead all aspects of the organization’s volunteer program.
  • Support departments to meet volunteer needs including recruitment and initial interviews.
  • Maintain volunteer files and Raiser’s Edge files.
  • Update volunteer database and track volunteer hours as entered by each department.
  • Prepare volunteer communications
  • Support staff to ensure proper volunteer recognition
  • Oversee continuous quality improvement activities applicable to the volunteer program


Participant Ambassadors

  • Recruit volunteers, design program schedule, manage program budget, and connect ambassadors to engagement opportunities across the organization. 
  • Stewardship of alumni relationships, including communications and continued engagement.



  • Mobilize membership sign up with a particular emphasis on participants, alumni and donors
  • Ensure Momentum staff understand the value of membership and can promote the program in a consistent and compelling way to participants
  • Provide opportunities for members to engage with the Momentum community (e.g. event invitations)
  • Encourage annual renewal of membership
  • Ensure Raiser’s Edge members information is maintained for governance purposes (e.g. list of current members available and record of past-members)

Organizational Support 

  • Support teammates with production of organizational events
  • Participate in committees, chores, staff meetings and other organizational activities
  • Other duties as required


Qualifications, Experience & Competencies

  • Post-secondary degree in social work, social sciences, community economic development, communications or related field, or demonstrated equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in community development, or community economic development
  • Knowledge of the Calgary human services and non-profit landscapes
  • Superb communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated abilities in working with, facilitating and brokering partnerships with a diversity of people and groups including community leaders, business and government representatives and in particular people from low-income backgrounds
  • Awareness of key socio-economic issues in Calgary and familiarization with the Calgary context
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communications and group facilitation skills.
  • Diligence with data entry, analysis, integrity and reporting
  • Effective leadership and team building skills
  • Event management experience
  • Volunteer management experience an asset
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Computer literacy in word processing, database, data manipulation, email and internet system
  • Access to own transportation
