Community Engagement Coordinator

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.


The Mustard Seed’s Community Engagement team fosters a Christ-centered understanding of poverty and homelessness to transform worldviews and mobilize the community. The team facilitates experiential and educational opportunities for people of all ages to broaden their knowledge of issues surrounding poverty and homelessness.

To this end, The Community Engagement Coordinator will support the design, development and implementation of Community Engagement programming in Calgary. The Community Engagement Coordinator will create and foster relationships with churches, schools and post-secondary institutions to advance understanding of homelessness and poverty, and to mobilize the community to be part of building hope and wellbeing for our most vulnerable citizens.


  • Creating and fostering relationships by networking with, and making presentations and speaking to a diverse range of groups including churches, educational institutions and the wider community
  • Facilitating the various community engagement programs that take place throughout the year such as DemoCrew, DemoCrewPlunge & CollegeCrew 
  • Executing strong administrative duties to track and evaluate programming, relationships and student engagement
  • In conjunction with the Community Engagement Manager & HR team, contribute to the recruitment, training, and support of summer interns and practicum students
  • Providing strong social media services & contribute to an ongoing social media strategy
  • Assisting the Community Engagement Manager with the development and implementations of new initiatives to increase awareness around issues of poverty, homelessness and exits from homelessness for staff, volunteers, and the general public


  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree; studies in fields related to development and social justice considered an asset
  • 3+ years of related experience working with communities affected by poverty and homelessness
  • Proven ability to network and build strategic partnerships
  • Excellent public speaking skills; preaching experience considered an asset
  • Excellent administrative, time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, public relations and group facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated success in leading and managing staff and volunteers
  • Self-motivated and capacity to work independently
  • Competent with Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and/or video editing considered an asset


  • This is a permanent fulltime 40 hours per week position
  • Evening and weekend work might be required
  • A medium level of physical fitness is necessary for leading DemoCrew programming
  • Access to a vehicle for frequent external meetings and presentations required
  • Employment Security Check is required

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
