Community Connections Coordinator

Reports to: Community Programs Manager

Hours: 35 hours/week, flexible hours which will include weekdays and evenings

Position Description:

Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association is a vibrant, inclusive community centre offering community based programming, childcare, sports and recreation facilities, and private hall rentals for business functions and special events.

Community Connections is made up of a number of programs founded in an Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach to increase positive social ties, develop networks of support, and create engagement opportunities for community members who are at risk of social isolation. These include, Neighbour Night (a weekly participant-driven peer support program), neighbour-to-neighbour peer supports (primarily focused on providing supports to seniors), monthly Community Potlucks, drop-in programming and volunteer opportunities. Community Connections is delivered primarily by the Community Connections Coordinator and the Seniors Connections Coordinator.

The Community Connections Coordinator is responsible for facilitating Neighbour Night and Community Potlucks and coordinating volunteers to support these programs and Fresh Food Basket, a weekly drop-in food access program. The Community Connections Coordinator works collaboratively with program participants and volunteers to shape the delivery of programs with a focus on offering programs that are inclusive, welcoming, safe and relevant for the people involved. 


Program Delivery

  • Facilitate a weekly participant-driven peer support program based in ABCD principles
  • Coordinate a monthly community potluck
  • Build safe and inclusive space for participants
  • Cultivate communication, leadership, and engagement amongst program participants and volunteers
  • Support other Community Connections programs as necessary

Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruit, coordinate and supervise a team of volunteers and interns
  • Maintain a thorough and organized volunteer database

Program Evaluation

  • Maintain thorough and organized records of program data
  • Adhere to reporting timelines and expectations of funders and other internal and external stakeholders
  • Communications
    Create program promotion materials
  • Communicate effectively, clearly and consistently with participants, community members, partners, volunteers and colleagues
  • Adhere to timelines and expectations for internal and external communications

Relationships and Engagement

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with participants, community members, partners, volunteers and colleagues  
  • Work openly and collaboratively with diverse participants, volunteers, partners and colleagues

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Degree, diploma or certificate in a related field of study
  • 1-3 years of experience with program development, group facilitation and community development; experience with Asset Based Community Development an asset
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability to create welcoming and inclusive spaces as a foundation for relationship building
  • Excellent group facilitation, interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable people and people of diverse backgrounds and abilities in a community-based setting
