Community Builder, Roofs for Youth (13 Month Contract)

The Agency

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a community-based charitable organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of crime and increasing community safety through preventative and restorative justice practices. To accomplish these ends, we provide direct services to individuals at risk, advocacy for effective responses to crime with the individuals involved and education for youth and adults in the community.

The Program

The Roofs for Youth Program (Roofs) is a Housing First program providing reintegration support for chronically disengaged and homeless youth aged 15-24 years who are at risk of involvement in the justice system without stable housing and support services. Roofs provides a continuum of services from discharge planning to housing placement and then continuous case management supports to help the youth stay out of jail, remain housed and successfully transition to adulthood.

The Position

The Community Builder will work within the client support team on site in Roofs for Youth. Reporting to the Team Lead, the Community Builder will support clients in community integration. Evenings and weekends will be required as well as flexibility in working in a shifting environment.

Roles and Responsibilities will include:

  • Build relationships with youth and assist in the identification of key natural supports, personal relationships that will build capacity.
  • Assist with planning activities of daily living, recreation and leisure opportunities in consultation with the youth
  • Facilitate activities within and outside of the building and support clients in positive pro-social engagement
  • Develop an ongoing community activities plan and engage staff and youth in the design and delivery of the program
  • Strengthen external resources so that programming can be maintained onsite and in the community
  • Completing documentation and case notes as required
  • Support case management and goal achievement of clients
  • Attend staff meetings

The Community Builder will have a combination of post-secondary education in a relevant discipline and experience working with the target population. Knowledge and experience of corrections, Housing First, and FASD will be considered an asset.

This is a contract full-time (40 hours/week) position until December, 2018.

The successful candidates for the above position will have to successfully undertake a Calgary Police Information Check (CPIC) and a Child Welfare Information System [CWIS] check.
