Community Advocate

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Principal duties include client support and direct support to programs, workshops and events.

Basic Needs Connections

  • Research and maintain awareness of community resources, referral processes, new programming and eligibility requirements
  • After a holistic assessment, work with people to identify and prioritize their needs before connecting them to the resources to meet those needs
  • Advocate on behalf of individuals as required
  • Assist individuals with crisis management, as necessary
  • Manage information and documents in a timely manner, based on privacy requirements.

Individual and Family Resiliency

  • Based on a person’s goals and strengths, support them to increase their knowledge base and build on their current skills
  • Support individuals to increase their self-advocacy skills and ability to advocate on behalf of themselves
  • Assist with creating opportunities to develop or strengthen a person’s and/or families connections within the community.

Community Development

  • In conjunction with residents and other neighbourhood stakeholders, identify strengths and gaps
  • Contribute to the initiatives to build on the strengths and close the gaps, as prioritized by the working groups

Program Development and Agency Priorities

  • Participate in the professional design, development, promotion, delivery and evaluation of BowWest’s programs and services
  • Undertake agency wide initiatives as assigned.

Other duties will be allocated as needed.

Supervision Received:

The Community Advocate reports to the Executive Director who creates the work schedule, assigns responsibility areas and provides mentorship and supervision. The supervision starts with a probationary period where the Community Advocate is trained and mentored and, after 3 months is expected to effectively and efficiently fulfil their assigned responsibilities and duties. On-going mentoring includes an informal coffee meetings with the Executive Director every 4 to 6 weeks, an annual performance review and training for each new responsibility area and/or task.

Supervision Exercised:

The Community Advocate supervises volunteers and practicum students and works closely with Assistant Advocates.

Qualifications & Skills:

Minimum qualifications:

  • Undergraduate Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Community Development or a relevant discipline
  • 6 months of experience with front-line client service in a social-service agency that values client advocacy in a multi-agency environment
  • Experience working in a multi-cultured client environment
  • Ability to work in partnership with multiple agencies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to take initiative and strengthen a collaborative work environment that is client-focused and task-oriented
  • A track record of personal accountability including: a strong work ethic, integrity and proven organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work a varied schedule of days, evenings and weekends
  • Access to a vehicle to travel between work locations and to obtain and distribute program materials
  • Ability to deal with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment.

Additional qualifications:

  • Fluency in a language(s) additional to English
  • Ability to lead workshops
  • Experience in community development
  • Knowledge of program planning and evaluation
  • Training considered an asset is Suicide Prevention Training, First Aid and CPR, Financial Coaching, various parenting support models.
