Community Advocate

Community Advocate – Full time Permanent Position

(37.5 hours/week for a 1 year term)

 Sunrise Community Link Resource Centre

 

Sunrise Community Link (Sunrise) is a community development organization and resource centre engaged in poverty reduction and community economic capacity building in Calgary. We work primarily within 18 diverse communities in East Calgary to provide advocacy, basic needs referrals and support, as well as financial empowerment opportunities to more than 3,300 clients and their families each year. By providing sensitive, respectful, and consistent services, Sunrise has established a safe, accessible, and trusted centre that truly belongs to the community. We have earned a strong reputation for providing crucial basic needs, advocacy, and financial empowerment services that significantly alleviate our clients' financial and personal crises.   

We are currently seeking a Community Advocate to join our dynamic and diverse team who would be responsible for assisting clients to access basic needs supports and community services while coaching individuals on building self-advocacy skills, and improving their financial well-being. We are looking for candidates with a unique skill set that is focused on helping people, solving problems creatively, and committing to walking beside people in their journey’s rather than leading them. As a non-profit organization, we are continually in a state of growth and change and require this new staff to be adaptive and flexible. The Community Advocate would report directly to the Team Leader.

 

Responsibilities will include:

1)    Intake and Assessment:

  • Provide intake and assessment to individuals and families accessing Sunrise Community Link Resource Centre;
  • Work with clients to identify their needs and match them with resources to assist meeting those needs;
  • Create a comprehensive plan with clients and connect them with on-going support and resources;
  • Crisis management;
  • Occasional coverage on front desk/reception.

 

2)    Case Management:

  • Coordinate services, programs or supports that address the needs identified by the client and builds the capacity of the client;
  • Provide follow-up with clients as to appropriate fit of referrals and make changes as needed;
  • Conduct case conferences as needed;
  • Provide interim counselling and support to clients in crisis; and
  • Provide financial coaching and financial literacy related supports when required.

 

3)    Advocacy:

  • Support residents to increase their self-advocacy skills and ability to advocate on behalf of themselves; and
  • Advocate on behalf of residents with agencies, departments and systems as required.

 

4)    Community Development:

  • With the support of the Sunrise team, identify gaps in services and common community needs;
  • With the support of the Sunrise team, facilitate a community-wide response to community needs identified;
  • Attend community meetings as needed;
  • Work with community members to connect to programs and services that promote skill building and increased knowledge; and
  • Support the community development work of the organization as well as within the Greater Forest Lawn Community.

 

5)    Basic Needs Support:

  • Research and maintain awareness of community resources, referral processes, new programming and eligibility requirements;
  • Work with community members to identify their needs and match them with resources to assist meeting those needs;
  • Crisis management as required; and
  • Assist individuals and families in accessing the Basic Needs Fund.

 

6)    Program Development and Ongoing support:

  • Co-facilitate various programs for parents and individuals including the Taking Charge Program and financial literacy workshops; and
  • Support the Financial Empowerment work in the centre which includes: Tax filing and Benefits Navigation, opening RESP’S, financial literacy programs, and financial coaching.

 

Qualified applicants will possess:

  • Undergraduate Diploma or Degree in Social Work or a relevant discipline;
  • Organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated to take initiative, and strong problem solving skills;
  • Strong belief in resiliency and strength-based practice approach;
  • A commitment to walking beside clients in their journey and to help them find their voice;
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources, programs and services for individuals and families considered an asset;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Excellent relationship building skills with the ability to function as part of a healthy team;
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and families who are experiencing a high level of crisis in their lives;
  • Adaptive and responsive to change,
  • Experience working with diverse and transient populations;
  • Experience with trauma informed care is an asset;
  • Physically able to lift 20-25 pounds;
  • Ability to communicate in a second language is an asset;
  • Additional training that would be considered an asset are: Suicide Prevention Training (ASSIST), First Aid and CPR, Financial Literacy Training, and Financial Coaching.

 

This position will commence immediately, 37.5 hours per week with an excellent benefits package that begins after three months of employment. A matching RRSP program after 1 year of employment is available. Salary range is between $40,616.00 - $50,770.00 depending on qualifications and experience.
