Communications Coordinator

Youth Central is a dynamic, creative and energetic non-profit organization, with the mission to “inspire, engage and celebrate youth through community participation.”  This full-time Communications Coordinator position will be responsible for the communications for the organization as well as the operation of the Youth Are Awesome (YAA) program.  Youth Are Awesome is a blog-based website ( run by youth for youth, focusing on the great things the youth are doing and the great things they could be doing in Calgary. 


This position reports directly to the Program Director.

  • Ensure organizational key messages is consistent throughout the organization
  • Implement communication-related tactics arising from Youth Central’s 3-year Strategic Plan
  • Writing and release of press releases, PSA’s and media advisories
  • Creation of Youth Central’s quarterly e-newsletter
  • Development of Youth Central’s Annual Report
  • Support staff with graphic design needs for programs and Youth Central, in conjunction with Program Director
  • Maintain media contact lists
  • Production and editing  of videos for programs and Youth Central
  • Maintain the Youth Central website
  • Maintain Youth Central’s  online presence through various social media channels and blogs, in conjunction with Program Director
  • Seek opportunities for Youth Central to be spotlighted in the community
  • Participate in the  Communications Committee of the Board of Directors, at the discretion of the Executive Director

Youth Are Awesome (YAA)

  • Be the primary contact and spokesperson for the YAA program
  • Ensure YAA website is functioning at optimum levels and youth volunteers, are actively blogging about various topics of importance to them
  • Facilitate youth committee meetings, while motivating, engaging, inspiring the committee members and supporting youth ideas
  • Liaise with existing and potential project partners and youth volunteer groups in developing future directions of YAA and blogging opportunities
  • Market and promote the YAA website to various groups in Calgary
  • Generate revenue for the program through ad sales and sponsored blog posts
  • Ensure blogs are appropriate and edited prior to posting
  • Manage, design and update the existing YAA website
  • Recruit new YAA youth volunteers
  • Promote YAA through various social media



  • Post-secondary education and 1 - 3 years of related experience
  • Experience with graphic design (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Illustrator), website design, and WordPress
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with communications and managing social media platforms
  • Experience with video creation and editing is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Personally motivated and dependable
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task
  • Experience working with youth, and enjoys working with youth of all ages
  • Administrative skills
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some work on evening and weekends
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude!
