Communications Coordinator

The Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) is Canada’s national voice for Canadians with Down syndrome dedicated to our mission that all people are valued, fully participating citizens.

The Canadian Down Syndrome Society is accepting applications for the position of:

Communications Coordinator

This is a full time position based in Calgary, Alberta.  The Canadian Down Syndrome Society is national in scope, the candidate would work with our Board members, volunteers and affiliates nationwide on all external marketing communication for national distribution, with a focus on communication with the CDSS membership and stakeholders. This position works closely with all departments to ensure that the vision, mission, and values of The Canadian Down Syndrome Society and people with Down syndrome are achieved.

Responsibilities would include: 

  • Strategic Communications
    • Communicate clearly, accurately, and often with all members, donors, stakeholders and general public
    • Manage and evaluate the CDSS Communications Strategic Plan
    • Development and implementation of effective marketing and communication strategies
    • Keeps up-to-date with disability and Down syndrome related issues and news stories
  • Tactics & Programs
    • Support the Fund Development and Events team in Go21, World Down Syndrome Day and Canadian Down Syndrome Week initiatives
    • Work within Fund Development department to unify Communications and Fund Development initiatives
    • Manage the Canadian Down Syndrome Awards and other CDSS Awards and prizes
    • Develop the organization’s Annual Report
    • Liaise with press and media; create media opportunities, represent as CDSS spokesperson when needed, identify and support potential spokespeople
    • Work closely with Resource department to develop resources for national distribution 
    • Manage website and online identity
      • Manage and facilitate CDSS blogs (with the Awareness Leader, Resource Manager and VATTA)
      • Ensure information is timely and accurate
      • Develop content for social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, etc.)
      • Monitor, administrate, and report on social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, etc.)
      • Manage and facilitate CDSS’s monthly email newsletter, and other e-blasts (through eTapestry and Constant Contact); monitor and evaluate email performance  
    • Manage CDSS brand consistently and effectively
    • Facilitate communication between affiliated CDSS groups and stakeholders
    • Any other duties, responsibilities and special projects, as assigned by the Executive Director
  • Reporting
    • Meet with and provide reports to the Communications-related Working Groups
  • Systems & Structures
    • Provide technical support for office staff (on PC and Mac, office workstations and laptops)
    • Liaise with and support CDSS’s IT company
    • Assist and support the position of office administrator
    • Cost control of CDSS deliverables and merchandise 

Employment Requirements: 

  • 2 or more years in a Communications role (or equivalent)
  • Bachelor/Undergraduate Degree in Communications, Public Relations or equivalent experience
  • Strong graphic, web and print design experience, organizational, interpersonal and communications skills
  • Proficient at Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress, and Microsoft Office
  • Can work in both Mac and PC environments
  • Strong background in writing and editing
  • Have strong public and media relations skills
  • Willing to travel as required
