Children's Therapist

Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter (CWES) is committed to providing client-centered services that are effective in responding to and preventing family violence and abuse. The Children’s Therapist works towards this goal by providing therapeutic support to children ages 6 to 17 who have been exposed to, or experienced, family violence or abuse and for their families. The program seeks to enhance the safety and wellbeing of children, to contribute to the prevention of future challenges often correlated to the experience of abuse in childhood, and to enhance connections within the family (as appropriate).

This is a full-time union position reporting to the Manager of Healthy Relationships. Hours of work: Monday to Friday; times vary (two evenings per week is required).


  • To provide therapeutic services to children, youth who have been exposed to or have experienced family violence and abuse from a client-centered and feedback informed perspective.
  • To provide counselling support to parents in order to meet child’s needs and enhance family connections.                                        
  • To collaborate with other programs at CWES, i.e. to receive referrals from all other clinical programs, and to make internal or referrals, to ensure continuity of care and to meet the family’s needs, to provide consultation services to other programs as required.
  • To collaborate with, and refer to, external partners when needed to meet the needs of the child.
  • To ensure ethical documentation and consent practices, as well as program evaluation protocols are followed, and processes adheres to accreditation standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Master’s degree in social work, counselling, or other related field.
  • Minimum of two years counselling experience with children and families.
  • Must be certified by a regulatory body that allows for psychosocial or psychological intervention.
  • Training and experience in play therapy and/or therapeutic interventions aimed at strengthening parent/child bonds.
  • Knowledge and experience with family violence is considered an asset.
  • Experience and training in individual counselling.
  • Knowledge of Feedback Informed Treatment and Response-Based practice is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Child Services required.


  • Must have CPR, First Aid & ASSIT (or equivalent) certification.
  • A criminal records search and an intervention record check are conditions of employment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and own a reliable vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed).
  • In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
