Child and Youth Program Assistant – Summer Student

COMMON PURPOSE
All employees have a responsibility to carry out the vision, mission, and values of Discovery House while adhering to all Agency policies and procedures.  Paramount to this responsibility is demonstrating a ‘client-focused’ approach to all aspects of Discovery House operations and a willingness to cooperate with all Discovery House staff and volunteers in translating these emphases into the planning and delivery of all programs and services.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Child & Youth Program Assistant will provide care to children in our Child Development Centre, who are attending Discovery House Summer Camp program, and supporting groups organized by our Child and Youth Program. This Canada Summer Jobs position is funded by the Government of Canada’s Summer Work Experience Program.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the guidance and direction of the Shelter Program Manager, the incumbent will be responsible:
•    To engage in one-on-one play and/or group activities with children;
•    To prepare and serve a light meal to the children and families attending the  camp or the groups;
•    To attend to children’s basic needs;
•    To provide children with emotional support and regulation;
•    To be a model of socially appropriate behavior;
•    Provide general programming support as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE THE OUTCOMES
•    17 to 30 years of age
•    Full time student in 1st , 2nd or 3rd year Child and Youth Care diploma or human services degree
•    Able to follow directives of the team
•    Willingness to establish and maintain boundaries with clients
•    Comfortable with continuously changing environment;
•    Experience in providing child care will be an asset
•    A valid Canada background check is required
•    Willing to learn
