Child and Youth Care Counsellor

POSITION OPENING

 RECOVERY, STABILIZATION AND DETOX (RSD)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            

 CHILD AND YOUTH CARE COUNSELLOR

 The Recovery, Stabilization and Detox program has a Full Time Child and Youth Care Counsellor Position available. The position involves working Monday to Friday, shifts rotating weekly (1 week 7-3, 1 week 3-11, 1 week 7-3, 2 weeks 3-11). This is a partnership program with Alberta Health Services working in a 14 day, social detox setting with a strong focus on mental health, stabilization, and recovery. The RSD program falls under the Safe Directions continuum and works closely in supporting those programs. We will consider short term contracts for the right individuals

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Engaging ‘at risk’ persons served 12-19 yrs old, experiencing physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms from the effects of substances, and / or experiencing issues related to mental health.
  • Monitor and work directly with the person served in all aspects of their life within a residential therapeutic milieu.
  • Supervise, organize, and implement daily living activities, and see these as opportunities for education and therapeutic intervention.
  • Demonstrate appropriate conduct in terms of behaviour, appearance, and presentation, and conform to Agency and partnership expectations with regard to confidentiality when dealing with persons served, parents/guardians, co-workers, other professionals, and the public
  • Attend to team membership responsibilities in terms of participation, communication, and positive attitude
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrates initiative, self-starter, collaborative problem solving
  • Model socially acceptable values, i.e., integrity, fairness, respect, self-care, accountability
  • Participate and engage persons served in structured recreational and therapeutic group activities related to drug use, mental health, and healthy living.

 Skills and Qualifications:

In addition to having a relevant degree or diploma, the ideal candidate will have excellent engagement, behavior management, assessment and counseling experience with high-risk youth and their families. You will have a high level of personal maturity and responsibility, and the ability to relate and work effectively with co-workers as a member of the treatment team. Your knowledge of addictions and mental health, community resources, your capacity to learn relevant theories, skills, and practices, and an understanding of the impact addiction and mental health has on youth and families will be an asset to providing interventions to persons accessing the RSD program.
