Career Counsellor – Low Literacy Modular Employment

Full Time Position - 37.5 hours per week

The Career Counsellor is responsible for providing professional, culturally sensitive, job search support for immigrant and refugee women with low English language skills. This position administers needs assessments and assists project participants in creating an employment plan.


  • Assess client’s employment needs and clients skill setProvide employment counselling including individualized career planning for clients 
  • Identify training programs and/or volunteer opportunities that enhance employability skills for clientsRefer clients to services in the community that can enhance their employability 
  • Provide clients with accurate labour market informationResearch and identify potential positions that suit clients skill levels 
  • Assist clients with their job search; help clients fill out job applications
  •  Develop client résumés and cover letters, enhance job interview skills, access the hidden job market, develop job hunting techniques and strategies
  • Forge relationships with potential employers for clients and maintain database of contacts
  • Accompany clients to job interviews, job fairs and other employment related meetings when required
  • Maintain client’s files and documentation
  • Provide internal and external referrals to clients
  •  Conduct client follow-up and support
  • Submit monthly statistical and narrative reports
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Department Manager

  • Maintain a positive image and professional work habits and represent CIWA in a professional manner
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative and enthusiasm
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times


  • Certification in the field of human services, especially in social work, life skills and/or employment counselling or equivalent with a combination of education and direct work experience.
  • Knowledge of Calgary’s labour force and market trends
  • ]Knowledgeable of accreditation processes, professional associations, and related immigrant services in Calgary and Alberta
  • Connected with immigrant serving agencies, business community, and social services
  • Computer literacy skills – especially with Microsoft Office
  • Experience working with Immigrant population, specifically with immigrant women who have low literacy issues
  • Culturally sensitive
  • Second language is an asset
