The work of the Business Development Department is focused on partnering with underemployed individuals living on low incomes, who aim to develop a sustainable livelihood through self-employment. The Business Development Department achieves this goal by offering business training programs, micro business loans, and wrap around support services. This position splits time equally between facilitating the Self Employment program and the Micro Business Loans program. The Self Employment Program is a 26-week long business training program, delivered on behalf of the Government of Alberta. Participants will write their business plan for the first 10 weeks, and then go on to launch their business in a supported environment in the remaining 16 weeks of the program. The program uses a combination of group learning and 1:1 business coaching over the 26-week period. Successful graduates of any Momentum business training program are eligible to apply for Micro Business Loans. These loans are for individuals unable to access traditional financing to capitalize the launch of their business. Maximum loan amounts are $10,000 and are repayable over 3 years.


Who we’re looking for:

You have experience administering loans. You are skilled at reviewing business plans, with a particular gift in financials. You are comfortable in the classroom facilitating business training classes and delivering feedback in a 1:1 environment. You excel in a team environment, working interdependently with your colleagues to achieve a common goal.

What you need to do it well:  

  • You have post-secondary education in commerce or finance
  • You’ve worked in loan administration before
  • You have a business background, knowledgeable in all aspects of running a small business 
  • You have a particular strength in developing strong financial models
  • You can teach in groups in and 1:1
  • You love to analyze numbers and data
  • You have data base experience
  • You understand issues related to poverty, perhaps have even worked in poverty related micro-lending before

Major Responsibilities

Program Promotion

  • In collaboration with the team, develop and implement effective Business Development Department marketing strategies
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with referring agencies
  • Respond to all inquiries via email, telephone, and/or personal meetings
  • Assist participants through the application process by providing orientation to programs, the requirements, and assisting with program application
  • Work with the Business Development Assistant to maintain intake and registration systems
  • Utilize risk assessment tool at intake to make effective intake decisions
  • Promote Micro Business Loans within Business Development Programs

Business Training and Participant Services

Self Employment Program:

  • Utilizing the common curriculum, provide facilitation within the Self Employment program incorporating adult education principles.
  • Facilitate the successful completion of assignments and final business plan, providing effective feedback focused on the participants’ growth and understanding of their business concept.
  • Ensure completed business plans are suitable for credit consideration
  • Work collaboratively with Business Development Team to provide smooth transitions between services (business training to loans).
  • Deliver programs within stated budgets

Micro Business Loans:

  • Assist participants through the loan application process, including refinement of business plans to meet lending standards
  • Participate in Loan Review Committee
  • Implement loan disbursements on approval
  • Facilitate Micro Business Loans administration
  • Implement policies and procedures
  • Facilitate the disbursement and collection of loans
  • Follow up on delinquent payments
  • Adjust payment schedules and loan maturity dates as required
  • Facilitate write offs
  • Follow up on business success (operational, jobs created)
  • Connect participants to appropriate resources

Evaluation and Reporting

  • Program outcomes, as stated in the program logic models, are closely monitored and achieved.
  • Work with the Business Development Assistant to enter necessary data for reporting and evaluation, utilizing the roles and responsibilities checklist and wiki for guidance.
  • Create and implement program innovation and continuous improvements, based on participant feedback and evaluation information.
  • Prepare necessary reports with comprehensive statistical and narrative program updates.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records

Departmental, Organizational, and Community Involvement

  • Share in the delivery of Exploring Entrepreneurship workshops, both on and off site.
  • Participate in Business Development and Momentum staff meetings.
  • Be involved in Momentum initiatives of interest and when capacity allows (eg: committee work)
  • Represent Business Development and Momentum at community events
  • Work collaboratively with Thrive to ensure CED principles are maintained throughout Business Development programming
  • Participate in chores
