The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.

Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy to access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness.  Using a multidisciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of healthcare that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Family Health Centre, we run a Senior’s Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one  Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Breastfeeding Clinic, a Community Food Centre, CLERC - legal support for Children and Youth and a Bottles4Health Program. 

The Alex is seeking a dynamic individual with a proven track record in leadership to assume the role of Associate Director of Housing First.  The Associate Director will provide strategic direction and leadership for the delivery of Housing services utilizing different clinical interventions and housing options to best meet the needs of a vulnerable population.     The Associate Director will have overall responsibility for all of Housing First services, operation, budgets, programs and clinical practices while ensuring compliance with high standards of client-centred service delivery. 

What you will do: 

  • Provide motivational leadership, management and support to team leads and their teams, ensuring clarity of direction, effective communication and development of personal potential
  • Lead and develop the strategic priorities and plans for Housing First services ensuring achievement and targets, delivering a comprehensive and expanding range of services to meet the identified needs
  • Contribute to the development of a program culture that articulates and demonstrates the values of The Alex to both staff and clients
  • Promote Housing First continuous quality improvement by assessing processes and making recommendations for improvements to enhance efficiency, effectiveness and productivity consistent with Housing First, goals, values and vision
  •  Ensure  the program and clinical services comply with the philosophy, values, procedures and policies of the Agency and regulatory bodies
  • Ensure the program operates in conformity with funder and stakeholder expectations
  • Collaborate and work with homelessness initiatives within the organization and the sector
  • Identify need for program development including research, training and sustainability
  • Engage in short and long term strategic planning for Housing First and The Alex programs
  • Enable innovation through monitoring and reviewing all Housing First services to ensure that they are effective and responsive
  • Set, achieve and be accountable for Housing First performance targets
  • Determine and monitor standards of performance throughout the range of operations, ensuring development of an effective service responsive to changing circumstances and demands
  • Contribute to the overall strategic direction of the organization 

What you bring:

  • Masters Degree in a relevant discipline or a degree with a minimum of 10 years experience working with the vulnerable population
  • Demonstrated excellence in coaching, team building and utilizing solution focused approaches
  • Strong strategic planning and implementation management skills driven by pursuit of excellent
  • Experience working with urban homeless populations
  • Demonstrated skills in supervision, operational, program and fiscal management
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Proven leadership, interpersonal communication and writing skills
  • Patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion and sensitivity to persons who have been chronically homeless and struggling with multiple barriers
