Advocate Assistant

Job Duties: The Assistant Advocate strengthens the BowWest team by providing direct support to Community Advocates (Advocates). Principal duties include: a) client support (reception, managing phone calls with clients and partner agencies, conducting phone evaluation surveys, completing/updating Consent and Intake forms with clients, and triaging client requests), and b) direct support to programs, workshops and events, including programs and events linked to volunteers and c) assistance with administrative tasks.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications:

  • 2-year diploma in social work or a relative discipline
  • 6 months of experience with front-line client service in a social-service agency that values client advocacy in a multi-agency environment
  • Experience working in a multi-cultured client environment
  • Ability to work in partnership with multiple agencies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to take initiative and strengthen a collaborative work environment that is client-focused and task-oriented
  • A track record of personal accountability including: a strong work ethic, integrity and proven organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work a pre-determined schedule of days, evenings and weekends
  • Access to a vehicle to travel between work locations and to obtain and distribute program materials
  • Ability to deal with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Degree in social work or a relative discipline
  • 2 years of experience with front-line client service in a social-service agency that values client advocacy in a multi-agency environment
  • Experience meeting the needs of complex clients
  • Experience working in a multi-cultured client environment
  • Fluency in a language(s) additional to English
  • Ability to lead workshops
  • Experience in community development
  • Knowledge of program planning and evaluation
  • Training considered an asset is Suicide Prevention Training, First Aid and CPR, Financial Coaching, various parenting support models
  • Ability to work in partnership with multiple agencies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to take initiative and strengthen a collaborative work environment that is client-focused and task-oriented
  • A track record of personal accountability including: a strong work ethic, integrity and proven organizational skills with attention to detail

Working Conditions:

  • The Assistant Advocate is scheduled to work in a number of locations throughout Calgary’s north communities
  • A shared office space environment is combined with private space for interacting with clients
  • Independent domestic travel is required for this position with mileage reimbursed on a monthly basis
  • A generous benefit package, 100% employer paid, is available after 3 months of employment
  • Vacation rates are set at 2 weeks for the first year of employment and 3 weeks per year for subsequent years

Work Hours

  • Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Thursday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Every other Friday from 9:00 am to 12 noon.
  • The schedule, although set for 3 month periods, is subject to change to reflect client emergent needs and programming opportunities
  • Coverage for Advocates on vacation or ill will alter the schedule
