Recreation and Life Skills Counsellor - Full Time

Nature and Scope

  • The Recreation and Life Skills Counsellor participates in groups and activities designed to encourage self-discovery, personal growth and the establishment of interpersonally skills within the program and larger community.  Encouraging the Clients to learned-through-doing within the recreation and life skills session to address issues of self-identity, self-esteem, personal respect, and problem solving.
  • Develop and implement recreation and life skills interventions and strategies with the Aventa clinical team to best support client success.
  • The Recreation and Life Skills Counsellor supports the 10 Client YAT caseload with complex needs and multiple barriers to successfully complete 90 day treatment.
  • Work in collaboration with Alberta Health Services and community partners to support Clients to incorporate recreation and life skills into their treatment and long term recovery plans within the community.


Responsibilities and Duties


  • Provides individual support to Clients. This includes information gathering, assessment, case planning, monitoring Client activities, strategic intervention, evaluation, referral, safety/recovery planning, discharge, and crisis management.
  • Provide and organize activities for the Clients that promote healthy lifestyles, active living self-esteem, self-reliance and life skills within Clients.
  • Assists Addictions Counsellors and Residential Counsellors as needed to develop and implement interventions and strategies to support Clients with immediate or long term needs; including crisis interventions and development of individualized Treatment Plan goals with each Client.  
  • Participate in a team orientated environment including supporting Addictions Counsellors with group coverage as required, Residential Counsellor by participating in posted medication times including completing proper documentation and cover the second floor when away or on breaks.
  • Facilitates Client transition to community by looking at their life skills and recreations needs that supports long term recovery goals and relapse prevention tolls including Discharge Plans.
  • Consults with and informs management of Client risk, progress and challenges.
  • Ensures proper documentation and management of Client files. This includes observing, recording and reporting on Client progress and challenges, documenting and distributing critical incidents according to policy, completing various forms and documents required for accountability and accreditation purposes, writing case notes, entering client meeting attendance in database, ensuring proper release of information records are in place, and protecting the confidentiality of Client records.
  • Requests/Facilitates case consultations with relevant members of the team to ensure effective assessment, treatment/safety planning and intervention.
  • Provides recreation opportunities within the community:
    • Adheres to safety protocols, communication and therapeutic boundaries while supporting clients in the community and within the residential programming at Aventa.
    • Maintains a current outlook schedule of onsite and community meetings, group, activities and appointments.


  • Communicates with other members of the treatment team to ensure effective Client service and risk management.
  • Attends team meetings and contributes actively to a positive and supportive team environment.
  • Communicates with Addictions Counsellors, Residential Counsellors, ASH and community partners to ensure proper understanding of Client risks and critical aspects of the treatment plan relevant to the residential and community environment.
  • Participates in ongoing learning and supervision
    • Reflects on practice and participates actively in performance reviews
    • Sets and takes action toward goals
    • Attends training as required by Aventa
    • Pursues practice knowledge and skill development in line with their job description, identified core competencies and indicators
    • Participates actively in supervision with their Program Manager
    • May support new employee/student/volunteer orientation through shadowing, training in protocols/practices and providing evaluations
    • May provide practicum student supervision.
  • Promotes quality of service and continuous improvement practices through participating in Agency initiatives, research, evaluation, accreditation, projects and committees.
  • Represents Aventa and its Clients well in the community. This includes collaborating with external partners, funders and agencies that support Aventa and Clients of Aventa, and attending court as required.
  • Gathers and tracks data and information relevant to Client outcomes, statistics, evaluations and follow-up surveys.
  • Inputs reporting data into the Aventa Database and provides feedback for reports as required.
  • Gives input to therapeutic practices and processes relevant to Client service.
  • May represent the organization at external committees and events.

    Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in the Therapeutic Recreation or Social Sciences, and 3+ years of counselling/case management experience in the disabilities and addictions fields.
  • Current CPR/ First Aid and Suicide Intervention Training
  • Knowledge in trauma, addictions eating disorders and mental health. Demonstrates the ability to guide, coach, motivate and inspire others to achieve success.
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Clear Criminal Record check and Child Welfare check and well as Federal Clearance is required upon hiring
  • Current Registration with Professional Association if applicable
  • Vehicle require with a clean abstract and a Valid Driver’s License
  • The position requires flexible hours to ensure robust programming is carried out
