Health & Safety Specialist

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.


Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting safety programs throughout the organization in preparation for a COR audit.


  • Establish and work with all Joint Health & Safety Committees to ensure legislative requirements are met or exceeded
  • In collaboration with the Director of Human Resources:
    • Develop, manage and deliver safety training programs with up-to-date legislations
    • Develop and implement the Health and Safety Management System
    • Develop an overarching Emergency Response Plan
    • Prepare The Mustard Seed for the Certificate of Recognition (COR) audit, which includes revisions to health and safety manuals and policies as required
    • Work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure health and safety concerns are addressed and resolved in a timely manner
    • Conduct work site incident investigations and workplace hazard assessments and provide recommendations to reduce / eliminate hazards
    • Assists in the processing, tracking, recording and reporting of accident and incident data (e.g. total reportable injury rate, lost time injury rate, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Degree, diploma or certificate program from a post-secondary and accredited institution in Occupational Health and Safety
  • A professional designation such as (CRSP, CHSO or CHSC) would be an asset
  • Minimum of three years of progressive health and safety experience
  • Experience in a non-profit sector is an asset
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Alberta OH&S Act and Regulations
  • Previous experience with developing a Health & Safety Management System
  • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to deliver health and safety related training
  • Ability to develop relationships throughout the organization and interact with the Executive Leadership Team
  • Self-motivated team player, enthusiastic about health and safety
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal)
  • Proficient computer skills and thorough understanding of Microsoft office suite
  • Experience in managing multiple priorities
  • Well organized and able to work independently and utilize sound judgement to perform all assigned duties with minimal supervision
  • Experience working within a team environment
  • Excellent client service skills
  • Positive and professional work ethics which include: Collaboration, Accountability, Respect and Excellence
  • Travel will be required to Edmonton, Red Deer, and throughout Calgary
  • Occasionally travel to Kamloops
  • Must have a current Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle
