Addictions Counsellor

Responsibilities and Duties Clinical 1. Facilitates process-style group sessions for diverse concurrent disorder Clients. 2. Provides individual counselling to Clients. This includes information gathering, assessment, case planning, case conferencing, monitoring Client activities, strategic intervention, evaluation, referral, safety/recovery planning, discharge, follow-up, and crisis management. 3. Consults with and informs management of Client risk, progress and challenges. 4. Ensures proper documentation and management of Client files. This includes observing, recording and reporting on Client progress and challenges, documenting and distributing critical incidents according to policy, completing various forms and documents required for accountability and accreditation purposes, writing case notes, ensuring proper release of information records are in place, and protecting the confidentiality of Client records. 5. Requests/Facilitates case consultations with relevant members of the team to ensure effective assessment, treatment/safety planning and intervention. 6. Supports Residential Counsellors as needed to complete drug screens, admissions, orientation and discharges. 7. Duties may change depending on therapeutic role within the organization. Administrative 1. Communicates with other members of the treatment team to ensure effective Client service and risk management. 2. Attends team meetings and contributes actively to a positive and supportive team environment. 3. Communicates with Residential Counsellors to ensure proper understanding of Client risks and critical aspects of the treatment plan relevant to the residential environment. 4. Participates in ongoing learning and supervision o Reflects on practice and participates actively in performance reviews o Sets and takes action toward goals o Attends training as required by Aventa o Pursues practice knowledge and skill development in line with their job description, identified core competencies and indicators o Participates actively in supervision with their Program Manager o May support new employee/student/volunteer orientation through shadowing, training in protocols/practices and providing evaluations o May provide practicum student supervision. 5. Promotes quality of service and continuous improvement practices through participating in Agency initiatives, research, evaluation, accreditation, projects and committees. 6. Represents Aventa and its Clients well in the community. This includes collaborating with external partners, funders and agencies that support Aventa and Clients of Aventa, and attending court as required. 7. Gathers and tracks data and information relevant to Client outcomes, statistics, evaluations and follow-up surveys. 8. Gives input to therapeutic practices and processes relevant to Client service. 9. May represent the organization at external committees and events. Qualifications, Experience and Skills 1. Bachelor’s degree in the Social Sciences, and 3+ years of group and individual counselling experience in the addiction treatment field. 2. Current CPR/ First Aid and Suicide Intervention Training. 3. Knowledge in trauma addictions and mental health 4. Basic computer knowledge 5. Clear Criminal Record check and Child Welfare check and well as Federal Clearance is required upon hiring 6. Required training: Standard First Aid, CPR and Suicide Intervention Training
